    Key Points

    • The leading man has been the subject of sexy memes since the film’s first photos were released, even though he plays a man made out of wicker.

    • Colman agreed that the sex scenes were “less embarrassing” than she usually finds them.

The “sex was great” for Alexander Skarsgård in his new movie Wicker.

The True Blood actor plays a character who seems like the ideal husband for Oliutcast who commissions Peter Dinklage’s Basketmaker to craft her a partner. It’s an adaptation of Ursula Wills’ short story “The Wicker Husband.”

In a joint interview with Entertainment Weekly, Colman says intimacy with Skarsgård’s Wicker Husband was pretty smooth.

“I do find sex scenes very embarrassing, and I didn’t in this,” Colman says, “because we got on so well and because there was humor to the sex scenes as well, which makes it less embarrassing. And [directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson] are married, and they would demonstrate. So it was like, okay, we’re all in this together. And it was a closed set.”

Then there was the fact that Skarsgård was encumbered by his costume.

“And also I suppose a little bit,” Colman says, “I was less [embarrassed] because I was thinking this poor guy is wearing a basket and so let’s not get too embarrassed that there’s other things at play.”

Her leading man says he wasn’t as mobile as usual.

“The restriction of the costume would inform the sex scenes a little bit because again, we shot those scenes very early on. It was the first couple of days,” he explains. “So I was still figuring out the physicality and what the limitations were of wearing the suit. So there were certain things like in bed, you’re not super nimble, so it’s like, all right, maybe that didn’t quite work. Let’s do it this way instead, and then you figure out a way to make it work.”

Colman describes Skarsgård’s costume as “soft,” despite its wicker appearance.

“It was made with a combination of organic materials and synthetic, and they had to weave it in a specific way considering how muscles and body parts would move,” he says of the look that was crafted by the award-winning artists at Wētā Workshop in New Zealand.

Skarsgård spent two hours in the makeup chair each day, regardless of whether his scenes were sexy or not.

    Wicker is in theaters now.
