After Major Failures, Disney+ May Become a Free Streaming Service

After Major Failures, Disney+ May Become a Free Streaming Service

For years, Disney+ was supposed to be the centerpiece of The Walt Disney Company’s streaming future. Instead, the platform has spent much of that time battling financial losses, slowing subscriber growth, rising prices, and criticism from fans who feel the service has changed dramatically since its 2019 launch.

Now, after years of setbacks, Disney may be preparing one of its biggest changes yet: a free version of Disney+.

While nothing has been officially announced, a new report suggests Disney is exploring a free tier that could dramatically reshape how millions of people access the streaming service.

    Disney+ Could Follow YouTube’s Lead

According to the new report, Disney executives have discussed introducing free content on Disney+ as part of a strategy to attract more viewers before encouraging them to upgrade to paid subscriptions.

The reported goal is to remove the barrier created by the subscription paywall and increase the amount of time consumers spend inside the app.

The report also notes that Disney isn’t alone. Paramount is reportedly exploring a similar model, while Netflix has acknowledged that free offerings could make sense in certain markets. Hollywood studios increasingly see YouTube as one of their biggest competitors, especially as free, ad-supported content continues to dominate viewing habits.

For Disney, offering a free version could become an entirely new way of introducing audiences to its massive catalog while generating advertising revenue.

Why Disney Needs a New Strategy

The possibility of a free tier comes after several difficult years for Disney’s streaming business.

Disney invested billions of dollars building Disney+ into a global streaming powerhouse, but those ambitions came with enormous costs. The company poured money into original programming across Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and other major franchises, producing an aggressive slate of high-budget series.

While some became major hits, others failed to generate the audience numbers needed to justify their enormous production budgets.

The strategy also created another problem.

Disney executives, including Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, have acknowledged that releasing so many interconnected streaming series made fans feel like they had to watch countless hours of television simply to understand what was happening in the latest theatrical films. That approach diminished the excitement surrounding major movie releases and fueled concerns that Marvel’s brand had become oversaturated.

The Star Wars franchise has faced similar criticism, with some fans arguing that the rapid expansion of Disney+ originals reduced the special event feeling that once surrounded new stories from a galaxy far, far away.

    Rising Prices Didn’t Help

At the same time, Disney+ became more expensive.

Subscription prices increased multiple times, while lower-cost plans introduced advertising. Many subscribers unhappy with unskippable commercials chose either to pay more for ad-free viewing or cancel altogether.

Disney has also experienced subscriber churn during periods when certain creative decisions or broader controversies prompted viewers from across the political spectrum to walk away from Disney-owned streaming platforms.

Although Disney+ remains one of the world’s largest streaming services, retaining subscribers has become far more difficult than it was during the platform’s explosive early growth.

Free Could Be the Next Phase

A free version of Disney+ would represent a significant shift in strategy.

Instead of asking every viewer to subscribe immediately, Disney could allow users to sample selected movies, shows, or other content at no cost while supporting the experience with advertising. Once users are regularly using the app, Disney could encourage them to upgrade for the full library, ad-free viewing, or premium features.

It’s a model that has already found success across much of the streaming industry and could help Disney reach viewers who have become increasingly selective about which monthly subscriptions they keep.

Another factor working in Disney’s favor is the strength of its library. Even if some recent originals haven’t generated the buzz the company hoped for, Disney still controls one of the deepest collections of family entertainment in the industry. Classic animated films, Pixar favorites, Marvel movies, Star Wars adventures, National Geographic programming, and content from Hulu give the service a catalog that few competitors can match. A free tier could introduce that library to viewers who have never subscribed or who canceled in the past.

Of course, any free version would likely come with limitations. Disney could restrict access to select movies and series, rotate available titles, or rely heavily on advertising to generate revenue. Even so, making part of Disney+ available without a monthly fee could help the company rebuild its audience while giving consumers another option in an increasingly crowded and expensive streaming landscape.

    Disney+ Is Still Evolving

Disney has not officially confirmed that a free tier is coming, and there is no timeline for when such a change might arrive.

Still, the report suggests Disney is seriously evaluating new ways to compete in an increasingly crowded streaming market.

After years of heavy spending, franchise fatigue, subscriber losses, and pricing backlash, offering free access to at least part of Disney+ could become one of the company’s biggest course corrections since the service first launched. Whether that move ultimately attracts new viewers—or simply changes how existing subscribers use the platform—may determine the next chapter of Disney’s streaming future.
