Among the ongoing series DC Comics is currently publishing, the undisputedly most popular is Absolute Batman. Although it only debuted in 2024, this alternate-universe reimagining of the Dark Knight has been making headlines and pushing boundaries with its action, characters, and political commentary. People can’t get enough of this gargantuan working-class Caped Crusader who fights for the little guy and battles corrupt systems and monstrous villains. He’s become so popular that he’s already set to have his own animated series adaptation. For Absolute Batman to have reached such a level of popularity, it’s bolstered some of the most iconic moments in recent comic history.

In the Absolute Universe, Batman has no money, training, or cave. Instead, all he has is the willpower and rage to strike back against the corrupt system that targets Gotham’s least fortunate while lining the pockets of the one percent. These moments defined Absolute Batman in the comic book hall of fame.
7) Absolute Batman’s Revenge on Scarecrow
Although Absolute Batman #24 only recently came out, it’s thrilling to realize that “The Straw Man” story arc has already cemented itself as one of the series’ best moments. After tearing Batman’s mind and life apart and making him public enemy number one, Scarecrow deems his work done and merrily strolls out of Gotham. But Batman isn’t done with Scarecrow. Ambushing Scarecrow in a cornfield, Batman’s blows up the villain’s crows, and he dons a mask to protect himself from Scarecrow’s gas. However, Scarecrow soon knocks the mask off and repeatedly stabs the Dark Knight. Yet despite the fear gas, Batman powers through its effects and socks Scarecrow square in the face. When Scarecrow desperately threatens to reveal the full truth of Batman’s origin, the Caped Crusader coldly denies the villain. In a twisted sense of irony, Batman then proceeds to crucify Scarecrow literally and leaves him out on the field. After spending the entire story arc questioning who he is, Batman’s regaining his resolve is immensely cathartic.
6) Absolute Batman’s Public Address

A significant difference between the Batmen of the main and Absolute Universes is how they interact with the public. In the main continuity, Batman uses his ninja skills to operate in the shadows and strike fear into criminals as a seemingly omnipresent boogeyman. Absolute Batman #13 shows the starkly different approach of this version of the Caped Crusader. He doesn’t fight evil in the darkness; he drags it into the light, kicking and screaming, so the whole world can see it. After escaping from his imprisonment at Ark M, Batman hijacks a local TV station to speak directly to the people of Gotham and to Bane. Batman outlines the corruption that the city’s leaders have allowed to fester at the expense of its citizens. To expose everything Ark M has done, Batman demands a rematch with Bane to decide the end of their rivalry. It’s a powerful moment that shows the Absolute Batman to be a hero of the people who wants to motivate Gotham to revolt against injustice.
5) Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman’s Team-Up

With powerful villains ruling the world and DC’s greatest heroes losing their support structures, the Absolute Universe can oftentimes feel pretty hopeless. However, DC teases a new dawn for this dark universe with the crossover between Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman. After meeting in Absolute Wonder Woman #15, Absolute Batman #16 continues the pair’s alliance. Desperate to find a way to turn his friend Waylon, aka Killer Croc, back into a human, Batman reaches out to Wonder Woman for her magical expertise. To get the cure, the duo must travel to the depths of the Underworld and retrieve it from the mighty centaur warrior Akrolis. Batman and Wonder Woman’s journey is full of great character interaction and even has the Dark Knight briefly reunite with his father’s spirit. Not only does Batman manage to get the cure for Waylon, but he also cements his friendship and alliance with Wonder Woman in the battle against the evil forces that govern the Absolute Universe.
4) Absolute Joker’s True Form
No Batman is complete without a Joker, and the Absolute Universe easily has the most spine-chilling depiction of the Clown Prince of Crime ever seen in comics. Before Absolute Batman #14, the Joker, or Jack Grimm, had mostly been kept as a mysterious figure who possessed all of Bruce Wayne’s wealth and training. He also looked like an average, handsome man. However, after Alfred recounts the supposed Grimm bloodline and how they rose to power over the centuries, he drops the bombshell theory. There is no Grimm family; it’s all just been the Joker taking on new identities. And on one of the Joker’s remote hunting islands, he finally cuts loose and reveals his true form. Gone is the no-nonsense handsome billionaire, and in its place is the 15-foot-tall ever-cackling monstrosity with razor-sharp teeth and claws, a tail, a slathering tongue, and pale-white skin. The Joker then devours a man he had kept trapped on that island for decades. This transformation sequence makes it crystal clear the nightmarish odds that Batman is up against.
3) Absolute Batman vs. Party Animals
Absolute Batman #1 needed to give its star a memorable debut, and it more than delivered. When the murderous Party Animals gang attack City Hall, Gotham’s new protector immediately squashes their efforts. This entire fight is an action-packed masterpiece that perfectly conveys this version of Batman’s fighting style as he takes out each of the Party Animals with bloody and brutal precision while still not killing them. We also see many of Absolute Batman’s unique weapons in action for the first time, including his clawed cape, knife ears, and shoulder spikes. And of course, who could forget when Batman responded to a Party Animal thug threatening him with a butcher knife by lopping the goon’s hand off with his badass Bat-Axe. Batman’s no-holds-barred beatdown of the Party Animals is an incredible introductory crimefighting venture that perfectly conveys what makes this version of the Dark Knight so different from those that came before.
2) Absolute Batman Deals with White Supremacists

If there’s one thing that’s certain about Absolute Batman, it’s that he doesn’t tolerate bullies. Absolute Batman Annual #1 got everyone talking at a scale that was impressive even by the high standards set by the rest of the series. The reason for this buzz was because the comic featured Batman taking on a very dangerous and real evil: white supremacists. A gang of bigoted Nazis that has cops in its ranks sadistically and brutally attacks some defenseless homeless people and immigrants. And in an image that lit the internet ablaze, when the leader of the gang tried to give the Nazi salute, Batman shut it down by snapping his arm like a twig. While that image alone became iconic, the rest of the beatdown is equally awesome as Batman performs piledrivers and unleashes a flamethrower on the bigots. This vicious attack was a powerful display of comics’ political power and how they can speak to real sociopolitical injustices in our world.
1) Absolute Batman and Bane’s Rematch
When Absolute Bane first appeared, he gave Batman the most brutal beating the hero had ever experienced. Yet even after Bane mutilated his friends, imprisoned him in Ark M, and had him injected with Venom, Batman refused to break. Absolute Batman #14 is the climactic conclusion of the “Abomination” arc, and we see the Dark Knight pull every resource, ally, and trick up his sleeve to take down the Goliath. In the empty stadium, Batman starts his rematch with Bane by dropping a skyscraper on him. It only gets crazier from there, as Batman sics the Batmobile, Killer Croc, and Harley and her Red Hood gang on the Joker’s top enforcer. All this damage pushes Bane past his limits as the Venom in his system mutates him into a towering and pulsating mass of muscle. Yet this is what Batman was hoping for. With Catwoman’s help, Batman injects Bane with even more Venom, overloading the villain and causing him to explode. This spectacular battle felt like a culmination of the story thus far, and it proved that nothing can stop Absolute Batman.
