Mothership will focus on gender and identity issues related to gaming.
Video games are more popular than ever, attracting all types of players from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. The gaming communitytoday is large anddiverse.
And as the community of gamers grows and diversifies, the industry diversifies its content as well,The Guardianreports. Video games now feature more female, LGBT, and nonbinary characters than they did just a decade ago.Mothership, a recent gaming blog, seeks to promote and spotlight these changes, highlighting gender, identity, and equity issues in the gaming world.
A Changing Industry
Mothership is the brainchild of veteran game journalists Maddy Myers and Zoe Hannah. Myers explains that she dreamed of building such a publication for a long time. But, for many years, financial considerations dissuaded her from taking the plunge.
Myers tells The Guardian, “I have dreamed of founding a website like this for a long time; it’s not as if readers haven’t wanted it before now. The problem I saw with the idea was not that people wouldn’t want it, but rather that I didn’t see a good way to pay for it. Journalism has been facing a monetisation crisis since the advent of the internet. It’s hard to convince readers to pay for something they are used to getting for free.”
Over the course of the last decade, Myers gained experience in gaming journalism while working for a variety of publications. For a time, she wrote forMary Sue, a publication that caters to feminist geeks. Afterward, she found herself employed by large gaming websites.
After a merger followed by layoffs, Myers became disillusioned by these large websites and collaborated with colleagues to start her own gaming news site.
Launching the Mothership
Myers shares how she first connected with Hannah as a business partner. She explains, “Another one of my colleagues at Polygon – Zoe Hannah, games editor – quit as well, for similar reasons. She hit me up with an idea she had for a feminist games website. ‘You should do it,’ I told her. And then I sat there for a moment and thought about it. No, we should do it! This was what I had wanted to do, before the industry had transformed me into someone so gnarled and jaded that I no longer believed it was even possible.”
Half a year later, after lots of advice and support from colleagues in the industry, Hannah and Myers’ website was ready to launch. From the get-go, Mothership already had more than 1,200 paid subscribers, demonstrating that there was an audience for Mothership’s feminist- and identity-themed gaming content.
A Gaming Website Focused on Gender and Identity
Myers explains that Mothership will fill a unique niche in thegaming community, describing the publication as “Teen Vogue, but for games (and without a corporate owner to kneecap it).”
Game Developerreports that, uniquely, the site’s owners are women, feminists, and members of the LGBT community. The articles on the Mothership website will focus on labor, gender, culture, and equity issues in gaming, while the site will also work to build a community of gamers online.
The owners aim to produce articles on a variety of gaming-related topics, including game reviews, opinions, criticism, and even historical deep dives. Many of these articles will focus on identity-related topics, such as investigations into how different video games depict various genders and historical revelations about undercredited contributors to video game history.
In an era wheregaming is growing in popularity and attractingall types of people, Mothership plays a key role in connecting all gamers, forming a diverse community. This publication tells gamers from all backgrounds, with many different identities, that they are welcome and represented in the gaming world.
