A route to a slower Sunday in Hyderabad

A route to a slower Sunday in Hyderabad

Sunday doesn’t have to be another day to maximise. When every free hour becomes an opportunity to discover, eat, shop or tick something off the list, even the weekend can start feeling like work. Hyderabad Times puts together an unhurried Sunday itinerary for those looking to slow down, wander, enjoy a meal, and simply spend time without watching the clock.8:30 am: Start with aHyderabadi breakfastBegin in Afzal Gunj with a simple South Indian breakfast at Ram Ki Bandi, a familiar name on the city’s breakfast circuit. Dosas, idlis and other staples make for an easy start, particularly if the plan is to take the morning slowly. Find a spot, order breakfast and linger over chai or coffee rather than treating the meal as fuel for the next stop. The streets around you will already be beginning their Sunday rhythms, making this as much about easing into the city as it is about eating.

10:00 am: Wander through the old lanes of HyderabadFrom Afzal Gunj, walk through the surrounding Old City neighbourhoods for a while, taking in the older façades, small shops, roadside vendors and the everyday rhythms of a Sunday morning. Try not to follow a prescribed heritage trail or identify every landmark along the way. The point is to notice what you might ordinarily hurry past. Stop when something catches your attention, or simply pause before continuing. The walk also creates enough movement to wake you up, but without turning the morning into an exercise schedule.

I think we sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves to see everything. At a museum, I would rather spend ten minutes looking closely at something interesting than rush through 20 galleries. A Sunday gives you the luxury to stop whenever you want and just take things in– Dharani Vani, software professional

11:00 am: Spend some time with history atSalar Jung MuseumContinue to the Salar Jung Museum in Darulshifa, where more than 46,000 art objects, manuscripts and collections spanning Indian, Middle Eastern, Persian, Japanese, Chinese and Western traditions occupy more than 38 galleries. Rather than attempting to cover the entire museum, pick a few galleries and stay with the objects that hold your attention, whether it’s the famous Veiled Rebecca, jade, miniature paintings, textiles or manuscripts. The museum is open on Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm, giving you room to move through it without racing the clock.1:30 pm:Pause for a leisurely lunch in Nampally–AbidsAfter the museum, make lunch a proper pause rather than a quick fuel stop. There are plenty of familiar options in the Nampally-Abids stretch, from the old-school fare at Grand Hotel to the casual choices at Pista House, while Barbeque Spice works for those looking for a longer sit-down meal. The choice can depend on appetite, budget and how much time you want to spend at the table.3:30 pm: Get hands-on with pottery in BegumpetBy late afternoon, switch things up by trying something more hands-on. Head towards Begumpet or Punjagutta for a beginner-friendly pottery workshop, with sessions offering options such as wheel-throwing and hand-building. If it is your first time, try something simple such as a small bowl, cup, or planter, and ask the instructor to guide you through centring and shaping the clay. Those who have attended workshops before can experiment with larger forms, textured surfaces or basic glazing. Check with the studio in advance about availability and whether a prior appointment or booking is required.

For me, doing less doesn’t necessarily mean staying at home all day. It can mean doing one thing slowly. A pottery class is perfect because you have to concentrate on what you’re doing. You are not thinking about taking pictures or checking what is happening somewhere else. You just spend time making something–

6:00 pm: Wind down byHussain SagarFinish at Hussain Sagar, where the open waterfront provides a natural change of pace after a day spent moving through the city. Walk along the lake, find a place to sit and let the evening light do some of the work. If you are not quite ready to call it a day, the Tank Bund–Necklace Road stretch offers options for an early meal or snack, including waterfront spots such as By The Bay and Lake District Kitchen. Once the city starts settling into its Sunday evening rhythm, take the cue. The day is done when it feels done.- Sanjana Pulugurtha
