On Saturday night in Los Angeles it won an Emmy.

The category was Outstanding Emerging Media Program, handed out on the first night of the Creative Arts ceremonies. The Television Academy’s category page makes the size of the upset easy to read. Blumhouse Enhanced Cinema, on Meta Quest, arrived with NBCUniversal, Blumhouse, Meta and Nexus Studios attached. The World Of Fallout, on Prime Video, had Amazon MGM Studios, Kilter Films, Magnopus and Bethesda Game Studios. The winner is credited to two small outfits. Ferryman Collective is an artist-led nonprofit theatre company. Virtual Worlds Company is an immersive studio in Cape Town.

All three nominees were headset work. That is a shift for a category which spent its early years rewarding companion sites and second-screen apps built around television shows. Forbes ran the odds on Ferryman two weeks ago under the assumption they would lose.

It is a VRChat world, not an app

If you have only ever used VRChat as a place to hang out, the production side is worth a minute. Ferryman did not build an app. The show lives in a VRChat world, the same kind any user can publish. The cast join it as avatars, the way you would drop into a friend’s room.

The two companies sit about 10,000 miles apart, Los Angeles and Cape Town. Rick Treweek, who goes by MetaRick, built the original Uncanny Alley world in 2020 during lockdown, then assembled the city for this production district by district in Unity, more than 30 environments of it. He was candid with South African site Gadget about the doubt that came with that: “My biggest struggle’s always been my conditioning that my stuff is too weird, and no one will like it, so it’s only for me.”

Christopher Lane Davis, credited as Screaming Color, did the animation, effects, music, and the performance interface the cast use to fire cues mid-scene. That interface is the quiet piece of engineering here. A costume change is an avatar swap. A lighting cue is somebody’s hand while they are still in character. Two actors cover fifteen roles that way, live, in front of people standing close enough to interrupt them.

Writer-director Stephen Butchko accepted with the cast. Deirdre V. Lyons, Ferryman co-founder and the show’s assistant director, was on stage with him, along with Treweek and performers Brendan Bradley and Whitton Frank. In the announcement the company put out through EIN Presswire, Butchko described the shape of the thing: “We know where the story begins and where it ends, but the audience determines so much about the journey between those points.” Bradley, in the same release, put the performing half of that more plainly: “Our job is to catch it, honor it, and weave it back into the story.”

The show did not appear out of nowhere. It premiered at Venice Immersive in 2024, where it took the Fanheart3 XR award. Since then it has played SXSW, Raindance Immersive, NewImages Festival and Augmented World Expo. The same release says the two companies’ VRChat worlds have drawn close to 750,000 visitors between them, a number we have no way to check from the outside.

It was not the only headset win that night. Outstanding Innovation in Emerging Media Programming went to Crafting Crimes, a Meta Quest piece from TARGO directed by Chloé Rochereuil.

    How to actually see it

This is a live show with runs, not a permanent installation. So there is a schedule to catch. Ferryman has put a set of celebratory Emmy performances on <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/uncanny-alley-a-new-day-celebratory-emmy-shows-tickets-1429311652629″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Eventbrite, and that listing is where the current dates and prices live.

For the VR performance you need a VRChat account and a headset. The Raindance Immersive listing puts the runtime at 60 to 75 minutes for up to six players. It gives the compatible hardware as Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro, plus PC VR headsets. VRChat is free. A ticket and a showtime is genuinely all you are adding. No headset? The Eventbrite page describes a YouTube livestream running alongside the VR performance, which lets you watch it without being in it.

The part worth holding onto is where all of this lives. No platform greenlit it. No storefront had to approve it. A theatre company published a world on a social VR platform that anybody can publish to, sold tickets, and performed. When Horizon Worlds pulled out of VR earlier this year, the communities that packed up for VRChat and Resonite were betting on exactly that openness. Most of the growth in immersive entertainment right now is in venues you have to drive to. This one you attend from your couch. And it just beat Fallout.
