If you’re looking for a cosy crime drama that you haven’t watched yet, there’s a six-part series over on streaming service U that might have passed you by. It’s called Art Detectives, and it’s exactly what you expect going by the name.
Mick Palmer is an art-loving DI who teams up with DC Shazia Malik to solve murders connected the world of art and antiques.
Cast-wise, it stars True Blood’s Stephen Moyer, Virdee’s Nina Singh, Gavin & Stacey’s Larry Lamb and Green Wing’s Sarah Alexander.
The show didn’t receive a whole lot of attention from critics, with only nine reviews collected on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of its release. Of those nine reviews, however, nearly all of them liked the show, landing Art Detectives a very strong score of 89% positive.
“Detective shows are one a penny, but when you find a good one that is thought-provoking and has an individual slant, it’s an instant masterpiece”, wrote the Daily Record. “Now, Art Detectives isn’t the perfect series, but by dealing with the topic of crimes relating to art, the cases are all intriguing.”
The New York Times called it “fun” and “another strong cozy-nerdy procedural” while the Mail Online stated: “It’s no Old Master, but this brisk art world whodunnit is a decent copy.”
Decider‘s review reads: “While Art Detectives isn’t really doing anything revolutionary format-wise, Moyer’s charm and the art-centric themes to the crimes Palmer and Malik investigate does make this show stand out.”
The similarly-named Collider wrote: “Art Detectives is one of the best British mysteries on Acorn TV in recent years, and its only shortcoming is the fact that it is only six episodes long.”
Meanwhile, small outlet Tellyvisions went even further and absolutely heaped praise on the show.
“Art Detectives is one of those glorious TV series that works on every level”, the publication said. “As an episodic case of the week, as a buddy cop drama, as a simmering overarching mystery and as a compelling character study.”
