The Doux is bringing the beauty shop experience to Roblox, a place where millions of young people already spend their time.
The Black- and veteran-owned textured hair care brand has launched “My Salon Empire,” a free Roblox experience that combines hairstyling, business management and some familiar elements of Black salon culture. Players can open and customize a virtual salon in Atlanta, work with clients, style textured hair and gradually expand their operation.
Founded by husband-and-wife duo Maya and Brian Smith, The Doux has long operated at the intersection of hair, culture and entrepreneurship. Maya, a licensed cosmetologist, opened a salon while the family was stationed at aU.S. Air Force base in Germany. The business eventually grew into a hair care brand that is now sold through major retailers.
“My Salon Empire” essentially turns part of that origin story into a game.
Players begin with a salon and work their way up by consulting with clients, shampooing and styling hair, earning rewards, adding salon chairs, hiring staff and expanding their businesses. They can also visit salons created by other players. The Doux says players do not need to purchase Robux, Roblox’s virtual currency, to progress through the game.
Hair is central to the experience rather than an afterthought. Players encounter styles including braids, locs, twists, blowouts and wash-and-gos, with textured hairstyles contributed by creators within the Roblox community. The brand says it plans more avatar customization options.
For Maya Smith, bringing those details into a virtual world is also about representation.
“Black beauty has always been about self-expression, and gaming is another place where people get to express who they are,” she told AfroTech Culture.
That representation can carry particular meaning in gaming spaces, where finding avatars, hairstyles and customization options that authentically reflect Black features and textured hair has historically been inconsistent. In “My Salon Empire,” the beauty shop also functions as more than a styling backdrop. The game introduces younger players to concepts including customer service, pricing, staffing and business growth.
Smith said the project was inspired in part by her own household. She and Brian are parents of five, including gamers, which made Roblox a logical place to reach younger audiences. She also connected the game to The Doux’s broader work encouraging young Black people to see themselves as technology creators, not only consumers.
The brand previously partnered with Black Girls Code on an initiative focused on Black participation in technology and artificial intelligence. On its website, The Doux says that collaboration was designed around the idea that Black creators should have a role in shaping technologies that represent their communities.
The Roblox launch puts that effort on one of gaming’s largest platforms. Roblox reported 132 million daily active users in July, giving brands and creators access to an enormous audience that increasingly uses virtual spaces for more than traditional gameplay.
For The Doux, however, the concept stays rooted in a distinctly familiar place: the salon chair.
Before the colorful bottles reached store shelves, Maya Smith built her career serving clients behind one. Now, the brand is introducing some of that experience, from the wash-and-go to the work of building a clientele, to players who may be opening their first salon on a screen.
“My Salon Empire” is available free on Roblox for phones, tablets and computers.
