New D&D Video Game Wants You To Actually Run An Inn – ‘Long Rest Tavern’

Gamescom showed off another new D&D video game this year: Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern. It’s all about running an Inn.

Finally, a game that gets right to the heart of what D&D is all about: running a fantasy tavern while the DM tries desperately to get you to engage with the storyline/adventure that they’ve been trying to get you to follow for the last six hours. Only Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern cuts out that last part, so you’ll have to imagine your own DM staring quietly into the middle distance.

The point is, despite several recent cancellations, there are new D&D games in the works. At Gamescom this year, we got our first look at D&D: Long Rest Tavern. As the name suggests, this is all about running a tavern in a cozy little fantasy town where adventurers gather to prepare for quests.

    D&D: Long Rest Tavern

I have to admit, it’s ingenious. After all, running a tavern in D&D is a meme that goes back to the earliest days of the game. Because even then, players understood that you could optimize a tavern, and it was a much safer way of making money than delving into one of the deathtrap-filled dungeons of 1st Edition, where just touching the wrong tapestry meant instant death.

For as long as there have been gold pieces, there have been players looking to exploit the fantasy economic system implied by prices and rules for haggling. Now, publisher Dotemu and developer Homo Ludens have made a game designed to let you do just that.

In D&D: Long Rest Tavern, you play as an innkeeper, running a tavern somewhere in the Dalelands. Over the course of this management sim, you’ll design your tavern, experiment with exotic ingredients to find the perfect brew, and serve up adventurers in need of a Long Rest before they start their next quest.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern embraces the spirit of the beloved franchise, empowering you to create your own story as you open your doors to the most fearless heroes on the Dalelands, a wild, ancient, and fertile part of the continent of Faerun. Don’t risk your life slaying the dragon – feed the fools who try and quietly profit from their spoils. Grow a humble roadside rest stop into a bustling, must-visit inn as you encounter a cast of vibrant, memorable characters boasting strong personalitites, unique expertise, and personal interests.”

From the gameplay trailer, the main focus of the game is on the recipes you make and the ways your tavern looks as you expand. More sim than VN, if you were expecting something a little more like VA-11 Hall-A or Tavern Talk or the like.

But over the course of your game, you’ll serve up Adventurers who will bring back souvenirs and mementos for you. Maybe even a rare ingredient or two. At any rate, you’ll have to wait until next year to take it for a spin. But keep your eyes peeled for more on this cozy management sim.

You’ll have to provide your own found family of traumatized misfits that settle down to run it, but, hey, that’s what your D&D campaign is for!
