In 1910, President Theodore Roosevelt stood in Paris and warned against the cowardly observer who sat in the bleachers while others competed, “marred by dust and sweat and blood.” Over a century later, American society has perfected a system that lets generations of young men live lives devoid of sacrifice.

Silicon Valley engineers spent two decades constructing the ultimate trap for the male psyche. Online sports betting turned every smartphone into a 24-hour casino, daring millions of young men to wager their money on everything from college basketball to the color of the Fed chair’s tie. This has triggered a massive surge in NILFs. While that sounds like a category on a graphic website, the definition is more troubling: Not in Labor Force. These are able-bodied young men who could work, but choose not to. The job market wants and needs them.

The Institute for Family Studies (IFS) recently published data documenting how it happened, why things are likely to get worse before they get better, and why they may never get better at all.

The economy evolved to capitalize on male withdrawal, realizing a guy paying for subscription servers consumes fewer rest cognitive years with their curtains closed, watching short-form video feeds. As the IFS report shows, 25 percent of men under 35 experience acute loneliness almost daily. Confronted with social awkwardness or a brutal job market, young guys pull out smartphones to numb their pain

Interactive media stepped up to capture whatever attention span remained. Since the early-2000s, male video game consumption has risen sharply. By 2024, over a third of teenage boys played games multiple times a day, and half of young adult men did as well.

Video games offer virtual sanctuaries where hard work pays off, or at least seems to. In World of Warcraft, a guy completes a raid and gets a shiny gold sword. In the real economy, he works 40 hours at a fulfillment center and barely covers rent on a basement studio. Video games provide a cheap sense of mastery, tricking the brain into feeling successful. Outside, a 25-year-old might be an invisible nobody, but in the digital realm, he’s capable of magnificent things.

The digital vise has tightened its grip through AI girlfriends and other modern substitutes for intimacy. Over 70 percent of teenagers access online pornography, and IFS survey metrics indicate 40 percent of young men view explicit media daily or several times a week. Real dating demands rejection, awkward small talk, financial expense, and emotional risk. High-speed internet streams unlimited fantasy directly to a bedroom without any danger of getting dumped. Decades of research link this habit to compulsive behaviors, delusional relationship expectations, and rising rates of sexual dysfunction among twentysomethings. Porn’s bad, but porn mixed with digital avatars and X-rated chatbots is orders of magnitude worse.

According to the IFS reports, 10 percent to 15 percent of young men interact regularly with synthetic “lovers” programmed to adore them unconditionally. Statistics show the scale, but numbers overlook real human misery. These are brothers, sons, friends, and colleagues. It’s worse to realize they’ve given up on genuine companionship altogether.

An AI girlfriend represents the peak of consumer compliance. The program never challenges the user, never gets sick, never nags, and never asks for financial security. It offers the illusion of love without the terrifying inconvenience of another human being. A man who gets custom-tailored validation from an avatar loses any desire to do the hard work of building a real relationship.

This problem will likely get worse as technology accelerates. Next-generation neural interfaces and hyper-realistic video generation will make today’s smartphones look like wooden toys. Young men facing high housing costs, stagnating wages, and social isolation will find fewer reasons to leave their rooms. Tech elites will happily supply both hardware and software, profiting from a population that trades adulthood for lifelong adolescence.

Young men needsical discipline, and social networks. Deciphering how to correct course requires the nation’s best and brightest minds. Without some form of radical action, machines will handle more of the labor, algorithms will control more of the romance, and a generation of American men will live lives that would’ve made Roosevelt recoil in horror
