College football fandom isn’t always family-friendly. If you’ve spent any time in a student section, a tailgate lot, or scrolling game-day threads online, you already know that some fanbases treat profanity as a second language, while others keep things PG no matter the stakes.

To find out who really leans into the darker side of fandom, we processed thousands of online posts to build a proprietary Vulgarity Score for every FBS college football program. We didn’t just count curse words, we looked at the density of profanity, negative sentiment, and even the volume of angry emojis.

What came back is a mix of expected hostility, genuine surprises, and a few programs that might need to wash their mouths out with soap. Here is how the nation’s loudest, saltiest, and most buttoned-up fanbases stack up.

    Key Takeaways

    • Mississippi State tops the list as college football’s most vulgar fanbase, posting a perfect Vulgarity Score of 10.00, closely followed by fellow SEC program Arkansas.

    • The SEC shows extreme contrast, housing the two most profane fanbases in the sport while Ole Miss remains surprisingly restrained.

    • Sacramento State stands as the most polite fanbase in the country, posting a baseline Vulgarity Score of 1.00.

    • Clemson, Syracuse, and NC State lead a remarkably clean tier of the ACC, balancing out Louisville’s aggressive top-three national ranking.

The most vulgar college football fanbases

The SEC brings the heat, and the profanity. Mississippi State and Arkansas stand alone at the top, basically treating game-day threads like group chats they thought were private. Louisville holds strong at No. 3, while Wyoming proves that Mountain West elevation does nothing to calm the nerves.

The sheer regional diversity here is impressive, whether it’s West Coast anger (San Diego State) or Midwestern rage (Purdue and Western Michigan), throwing digital temper tantrums is a universal language.

The least vulgar college football fanbases

At the other end of the spectrum, we have the saints of college football. Sacramento State registered the absolute floor for vulgarity, followed closely by the Ragin’ Cajuns, who apparently rage quite politely.

The ACC makes a massive showing here, with Clemson, Syracuse, NC State, and Boston College all landing in the top 10 cleanest fanbases. And BYU makes an entirely unsurprising appearance, keeping the Big 12’s conscience clear.

    Conference fan vulgarity rankings

    Atlantic Coast Conference

The ACC shows the widest gap in fan language, with Louisville miles ahead of the pack. Miami and Duke round out a surprisingly salty top three, while traditional powerhouses like Clemson and Syracuse anchor the bottom with aggressively clean online footprints.

    American Conference

Army and Charlotte set the tone at the top, completely flipping the AAC script. Navy, famously known for cursing like sailors, has actually drifted toward the middle of the pack. Temple rounds out the top three, proving Philly fans carry their reputation into every conference they touch.

    Big 12 Conference

Texas Tech and Arizona State lead a top-heavy Big 12, where desert heat and Lubbock grit clearly translate into keyboard hostility. At the absolute bottom, BYU keeps things squeaky clean, dragging the conference average down single-handedly.

    Big Ten Conference

The Boilermakers are boiling over. Purdue takes the Big Ten crown by a wide margin, followed by conference newcomers Washington and Maryland. Oddly enough, historically intense rivalries like Michigan and Ohio State sit firmly in the middle, while Oregon and UCLA remain completely unfazed on the West Coast.

    Conference USA

Jacksonville State doesn’t just lead Conference USA; they are a top-five vulgar fanbase nationally. Beyond the Gamecocks, CUSA is mostly defined by balance, tapering all the way down to Delaware’s incredibly polite fan presence.

    Mid-American Conference

Western Michigan brings the edge to the Mid-American Conference, outpacing Kent State and Eastern Michigan. The real story here, though, is the sheer drop-off: Sacramento State barely registered a pulse on the vulgarity meter, establishing the standard for digital restraint.

    Mountain West Conference

Wyoming’s fanbase sets the tone in the Mountain West, cracking the national top five for overall vulgarity. The rest of the conference remains relatively restrained by comparison, with Hawaiʻi bringing a predictable island calm to the bottom of the board.

    Southeastern Conference

The SEC pairs intensity with an absolute lack of a filter. Mississippi State and Arkansas don’t just lead the conference: they lead the entire sport. Nearly every SEC fanbase registers well above the national average, though Ole Miss somehow manages to keep things impressively well-mannered.

    Sun Belt Conference

    Appalachian State Mountaineers

The Sun Belt leans fiery at the top, with Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina driving the conference’s reputation for rowdy atmospheres. Conversely, Louisiana proves you can be passionate without the expletives, posting the second-cleanest score in the entire FBS.

Which College Football conference fanbases are the most vulgar?

    Average Score In Vulgarity Index

Looking at the conference averages, the Big 12 narrowly edges out the SEC as college football’s most vulgar conference, but there is barely anything in it. Texas Tech, Arizona State, and Baylor help push the Big 12 to the top, while Mississippi State and Arkansas do the heavy lifting for an SEC that still feels like the spiritual home of game-day profanity.

What’s interesting is how compressed the top half of the table is. The Big Ten, Mountain West, Independents, and Pac-12 all sit above the national average, suggesting that vulgarity is less about one region and more about pockets of especially intense fan culture. Meanwhile, the ACC, MAC, CUSA, and both Sun Belt divisions land below the overall average, despite each having individual fanbases capable of serious online meltdown energy.

    Methodology

We evaluated thousands of college football posts on Reddit across every FBS college football program.

To create the proprietary Vulgarity Score, we didn’t just run a basic word count. We factored in:

    • Frequency of profanity per 10,000 words

    • Average number of swear words per comment

    • Density of angry and vulgar emojis

    • Overall negative sentiment of the fan text

These metrics were combined and normalized on a 1-to-10 scale, where 10 means your fanbase is swearing up a storm and 1 means they are keeping things strictly family-friendly.
