Priyanka Chopra’s Mother Madhu Chopra Reacts to Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan Ad Row: ‘Boundary Is Necessary’

The controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon’s recently withdrawn Raksha Bandhan jewellery advertisement continues to draw reactions. After the campaign sparked a debate over the actor’s outfit and the portrayal of the festival, Priyanka Chopra’s mother, Madhu Chopra, has now shared her views on the issue.

Speaking to the media at an event on Thursday, Madhu addressed the larger conversation around personal choice and cultural boundaries. While acknowledging the idea of “my body, my choice”, she said that freedom of expression also needs to be viewed according to the setting and occasion.

“There has to be certain boundaries. My body, my choice works in those boundaries. It is good to do it,” Madhu said.

She further explained that, according to her, respecting other people’s values and maintaining one’s dignity are equally important.

“But that boundary is necessary. How you put your dignity and respect other people’s values matters a lot,” she added.

    Madhu Chopra says context matters

Madhu also pointed out that similar outfits may be completely acceptable in other settings, including professional or recreational spaces.

She said, “You can do it in a place where these things are common. Sorry to say that, our children also wear it. They wear it for work, for hobbies. But it is acceptable because that works in those spaces.”

Her comments come days after Kriti found herself at the centre of an online debate over a Raksha Bandhan campaign for jewellery brand GIVA.

In the advertisement, Kriti was seen wearing an off-white ensemble featuring a bralette-style blouse, a cape and a draped skirt. While a section of social media users criticised the styling for a festival-based campaign, others defended the actor and argued that Raksha Bandhan should not come with a dress code.

Kriti Sanon had responded to criticism

Amid the backlash, Kriti addressed the criticism on August 25 and argued that the meaning of a festival lies in the emotions associated with it rather than what a person chooses to wear.

The controversy continued to grow, eventually prompting the jewellery brand to withdraw the campaign from its platforms.

In its statement, the brand said, “We have the highest regard and deep respect for Indian culture, traditions and festivals. As a brand, we have always believed in celebrating these joyous moments with the entire family and this time we wanted to extend the love and celebration to our pets.”

The company further added, “If our recent advertisement has inadvertently hurt the sentiments of some segments of society, that was not our intent at all. Out of respect, we have withdrawn the said advertisement from all media. Wish you all the love & positivity this festive season.”

The campaign had also featured the idea of including pets in Raksha Bandhan celebrations.

Madhu Chopra’s remarks have now added another voice to the ongoing discussion around how festive campaigns balance modern fashion choices with cultural traditions. While she did not object to such clothing generally, she maintained that the context in which it is worn matters.
