The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday raised alarm over alleged online grooming and extremist conversations targeting minors on Roblox.
“The Roblox games are played by millions of teenagers here in the Philippines. So that should be stopped. Sa Roblox namin nakita ang extremist conversations,” DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said during a press conference.
“Yun sa ibang first person shooters game, hindi pa namin nakikita as extensive as what you see in Roblox. At saka international ‘yan. International ang scale ng groomers na nangyayari dito,” he added.
Authorities have observed chat groups on the gaming platform and found some of the language used in these online conversations was allegedly criminal in nature and involved incitement of teenagers to violence.
Remulla earlier expressed his support to impose a total ban against Roblox following the fatal shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University on August 18.
In March, Roblox expressed its commitment to maintaining the safety of children, including its Filipino users, on the platform.
The company emphasized that “advanced safeguards and robust safety policies” are already in place to protect its players.
“We have filters designed to block the sharing of personal information, our chat features don’t allow user-to-user image or video sharing, and age checks are required before anyone has access to chat,” Roblox said.
“Those same checks are also used to limit kids and teens to only chatting with others of similar age by default. Our approach includes multiple layers of protection: advanced AI detection systems, dedicated teams who constantly monitor for critical harms, user reporting tools, and ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and safety organizations,” the company added. —AOL, GMA News
