Dr Dre admits he uses AI to produce music: ‘I don’t see it as a threat’
Dr Dre has revealed that he uses artificial intelligence as a creative tool in music production, arguing that those threatened by the technology may be reluctant to embrace new ways of creating.
Dr Dre said he uses artificial intelligence in his music production and views the technology as a creative tool rather than a threat to artists.
Dr Dre admits using AI in music production
Speaking to The New York Times, the rapper and producer said he believed concerns over AI were often rooted in resistance to new technology rather than the technology itself.
He said, “I don’t see it as a threat. I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.”

The producer compared the current debate around AI to earlier reactions to innovations that eventually became widely used in music.
Dr Dre added, “I had a discussion with a few people a few days ago. They were against AI and I’m like, ‘OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out.’ Or synthesizers, right? It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things. I’m embracing it. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with this.”
Asked directly whether he was using AI in his own work, the NWA alum said, “Yes, I’m using it. Again, as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.”
His comments add a prominent voice to an increasingly divided debate over AI’s role in music industry. Artists, record labels and technology companies have been grappling with questions surrounding copyright, consent, and the use of existing music and voices to train generative AI systems.
Jimmy Iovine, Dr Dre’s longtime friend and business partner, suggested that the technology may already be more widely used in the industry that publicly acknowledged, saying there are “a lot of closet AI producers out there.”

Dr Dre agreed with that assessment. “That’s a good way to put it. They’re using it, they just don’t want to admit it,” said Dre.
The remarks come as generative AI music companies face increased legal scrutiny. Suno, one of the most prominent AI music platforms, has faced lawsuits over allegations concerning copyrighted material used in developing its generative AI technology, the wider industry has also seen growing efforts to identify and label AI-generated music.
Dr Dre’s position, however, is that AI should be approached as a another instrument in the creative process rather than a replacement for human artists. For one of hip-hop’s most influential producers, the technology’s potential appears to lie in what musicians choose to do with it.
