CID remains one of the most iconic shows in Indian television history, with characters such as ACP Pradyuman, Daya and Abhijeet becoming household names during its long run. Now, Dayanand Shetty, who played Daya in the crime series, has recalled how legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar was such a devoted fan of the show that she reportedly tried to intervene when it was taken off air.
The series premiered on Sony Entertainment Television in 1998 and continued for around two decades before abruptly going off air in October 2018.
Dayanand Shetty recalls Lata Mangeshkar’s love for CID
During a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Dayanand revealed that Lata Mangeshkar was not only a regular viewer but also a strong supporter of the cast.
“Lata ji was such a big fan. She loved us. She was a big support for us,” Dayanand said.
He then recalled how the legendary singer reacted when the show was discontinued.
“Even when the show went off air, she fought for us. She even called Sony America and the channel in India. She told them, ‘I watch this program, why do you have a problem? Why are you shutting the show?'” he shared.
According to Dayanand, Lata Mangeshkar’s support meant a great deal to the team, particularly because of the affection she had for the long-running crime drama.
Dayanand Shetty claims ‘internal politics’ led to CID going off air
When asked why CID was taken off air despite its popularity, Dayanand claimed there were issues behind the scenes.
“There was internal politics. It is hurting them now. Why would we care? We moved on,” he said.
He further suggested that there may have been differences between the channel and the team.
“Maybe, someone in the channel had a personal vendetta. They started from 2016. They wanted to replace our producers, which the actors did not agree to,” Dayanand added.
CID became one of India’s longest-running television crime shows and developed a loyal fan base over the years. The popularity of its central characters and memorable dialogues helped the series remain culturally relevant even after it went off air.
