In just a few days, Rockstar Games, partnered with Netflix, is<a href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-extended-first-look” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>set to releasean extended trailer and a first look at the most talked-about video game of the decade. However, someone else might have already beaten them to the punch,as a string of leaksof Grand Theft Auto VI’s gameplay has been released online by a hacker whose apparent sole mission is to protest the studio’s decision to put the extended first look behind a paywall.
It is no secret that people are tired of the wait for GTA 6, which has had quite a few delays and is continuing to play with fans’ anticipation. The game is set to release on November 19th, and while roughly 4.3 million copies have already been pre-ordered, no one really knows what is in store.
So, when Rockstar Games announced its plans to release a Netflix special for its subscribers, those who already paid to pre-order the game were understandably upset.Fans have waited years for the game, and here they are, facing another paywall in order to get a small glimpse at something they ran out of patience waiting for. This follows another disappointment from fans over Sony’s decision not to release a physical copy of the game, and to keep it digital only.
We can’t confirm whether or not that is the real reason for the game’s leaks,but we do know that this could cause damage to Netflix’s special, and to the game in general. Secrecy was one of the main motives of the game developers throughout the years it has been in the making, and leaks this close to its release cannot be a good sign. Many video games in the past have risen and fallen due to these kinds of leaks, and no studio wants their hard work to be speculated and scrutinized online without their approval.
For now, Rockstar has kept a tight lip regarding anything about the leaks, and the schedule for the Netflix special and the November release is still on track. All while any new clip that resurfaces from the leaks is quickly removeddue to copyright violations.
Is this a bad sign for the potential game of the year, or could these leaks be used for good? We’ll have to find out.
