Deepika Padukone has seemingly reacted to the latest controversy surrounding her exit from Spirit, after liking an Instagram post that criticised director Sandeep Reddy Vanga and his brother, producer Pranay Reddy Vanga. The development comes days after Pranay publicly shared his version of why the actor was replaced by Triptii Dimri in the Prabhas-starrer.
Deepika Padukone reacts to Spirit row
Deepika was originally set to star opposite Prabhas in Spirit, but exited the project in 2025. She was subsequently replaced by Triptii Dimri. The reasons behind her departure had remained a topic of speculation, with reports previously pointing to disagreements over remuneration, working hours and other aspects of the project.
The controversy resurfaced after Pranay Reddy Vanga addressed the issue in a recent statement. According to his version, Deepika had sought 10 per cent of the film’s profits, in addition to discussions around her remuneration and schedule. He also alleged that confidential details concerning the film were leaked during the discussions. The claims have added a new dimension to the long-running dispute.
Soon after Pranay’s comments, journalist Janvi Manchanda shared a lengthy Instagram post questioning the criticism directed at Deepika over the reported profit-sharing demand. The post argued that male actors have historically negotiated profit shares and questioned why a woman making a similar demand should become news. It also criticised what it described as a double standard in the industry.
Deepika appeared to show her support for the post by liking it. The post also used terms such as “misogyny” and “sexism” while discussing the controversy and the reaction to the actor’s reported demands. Deepika’s like has since been interpreted by fans and observers as her first apparent response to the latest claims, although she has not issued a detailed public statement addressing Pranay’s allegations.
All about the controversy
Sandeep Reddy Vanga had previously addressed Deepika’s departure through a social media post, although he did not name her directly. His remarks were widely interpreted as being aimed at the actor after she exited Spirit. The filmmaker had questioned the circumstances surrounding the departure and made comments about the film’s story and creative process.
Meanwhile, Spirit continues with Prabhas and Triptii Dimriin the lead roles under Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s direction. The makers have maintained that the film remains on track for its announced March 5, 2027 release date.
For now, Deepika’s social media activity has reignited discussion around her exit, while the competing accounts from the actress’s camp and the Vanga brothers remain a subject of public debate. Neither side has provided a jointly established account of what transpired during the negotiations.
