Sony still has no Playstation 6 release date, as hardware crisis complicates next-gen plans
Sony still hasn’t settled on a PS6 release date, as rising memory costs complicate plans for its next console.
Anyone waiting for Sony to start talking about the PlayStation 6’s release may be waiting a little longer. Despite years of speculation pointing towards 2027 for the next generation, Sony has yet to settle on when its next console will actually launch.
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the company still has no fixed release date for the PS6. The uncertainty comes as hardware manufacturers contend with rising memory prices and wider component shortages, with demand from AI data centres adding further pressure to already stretched supplies.
This comes at a point when the next PlayStation would normally be starting to come into view. The PS5 launched in November 2020, and the roughly seven-year console cycle had led analysts to expect its successor sometime around 2027.
When will the PlayStation 6 be released?
Sony has not announced a PS6 release window, although speculation has ranged from 2027 to sometime after 2028. Totoki had already suggested in May that Sony was in no rush to settle on its next move as it watched conditions in the hardware market. “We would like to really observe and follow the situation,” he said.
Totoki also warned that memory prices were expected to remain “very high” in FY2027, an issue that has only become more pressing as demand for components continues to climb.
How are AI data centres and component shortages affecting PS6?
The wider component crunch has become an increasingly serious problem for gaming hardware. Memory and other components are in high demand, while the rapid expansion of AI data centres has put additional pressure on supplies needed across the technology industry. Other pressures include energy supplies, trade disputes, and continuing geopolitical instability. Totoki acknowledged the difficult environment facing Sony’s hardware businesses and the need for the company to respond. “We need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape,” he said.
Sony has not said that the component shortage has delayed the PS6, so a later launch should not be treated as confirmed. However, Totoki’s comments make clear that memory prices and hardware supply are among the factors the company is considering before committing to its next generation.
Meanwhile, the PS5 still has plenty ahead of it. GTA VI is due to launch on 19 November and is expected to be one of the biggest releases of the generation, while plenty of other major AAA games are still targeting current consoles. That gives Sony’s existing hardware a substantial slate of releases ahead, even as speculation around its successor continues.
There are also questions around what the eventual PS6 will look like, particularly as Sony continues moving further towards digital distribution. Reports have suggested its next console could ship without a built-in disc drive, although Sony has yet to reveal the PS6 itself or confirm its final hardware.
