ASUS has certainly been keeping us busy with their products lately, with the ROG Strix OLED XG34WCDMS gaming monitor being one of the latest to land on our desk. It brings together plenty of the features we’ve come to expect from ASUS’ OLED lineup, but this time in a 34-inch ultrawide package.

Featuring a 34-inch 3440×1440 display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and an 1800R curvature, the screen wraps naturally around your field of view without feeling overly aggressive. The real star of the show, however, is the Tandem RGB QD-OLED panel.

ASUS uses an RGB Stripe Pixel arrangement designed to address some of the text clarity issues associated with traditional OLED sub-pixel layouts, resulting in sharper text edges while maintaining the colour performance OLED panels are known for.

The result is exceptionally clear images, with bright, vibrant colours and deep blacks that make OLED displays so appealing. The panel covers 99% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, offers true 10-bit colour and a Delta E of less than 2, making it well suited to content creation alongside gaming. A 1,500,000:1 contrast ratio also helps darker scenes retain plenty of depth, while HDR10 support and VESA DisplayHDR 500 True Black certification round out the package.

ROG has also introduced its BlackShield film to the panel, designed to improve both durability and image quality, claiming the coating offers 2.5 times better scratch resistance than previous-generation QD-OLED panels and improves perceived black levels by up to 40% in well-lit environments. While I’m certainly not going to test the scratch resistance intentionally, the improved performance in brighter environments is particularly welcome given how reflective OLED displays can sometimes be.

The native 3440×1440 resolution strikes a nice balance for a 34-inch ultrawide display, while the 280Hz refresh rate and incredibly quick 0.03ms GTG response time make motion look exceptionally smooth. During my time gaming on it, movement remained incredibly fluid, and combined with the clarity and vibrant colours of the OLED panel, games looked fantastic.

AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility help keep things smooth when the frame rate fluctuates. At the same time, ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur further reduces ghosting and motion blur. There’s also Aspect Control for competitive players who don’t necessarily want to use the entire 34-inch ultrawide display, allowing the screen to replicate smaller 24.5-inch or 27-inch displays.

Of course, burn-in remains one of the biggest concerns surrounding OLED displays, so ASUS OLED Care Pro includes pixel cleaning, screen movement and boundary detection, alongside a custom heatsink and internal airflow design.

There’s also a Neo Proximity Sensor that detects when you’ve moved away and automatically switches the display to a black image, restoring it when you return. It’s a clever way to reduce unnecessary static images, and a three-year warranty that includes burn-in coverage provides additional peace of mind.

When it comes to setup, the hollowed-out stand doesn’t take up much desk space and offers plenty of adjustment, with 110mm of height adjustment, 25 degrees of swivel in either direction, and between -5 and 20 degrees of tilt. It also supports a 100x100mm VESA mount if you’d rather use a monitor arm.

From a design perspective, the ROG Strix OLED XG34WCDMS gaming monitor is actually fairly restrained by ROG standards. The rear panel still has the aggressive lines and styling you’d expect from a gaming-focused display, but ASUS has skipped the RGB lighting we’ve seen on some of its other monitors. It still looks unmistakably like a gaming product from the back, but without adding flashy lighting that you’ll rarely see while actually using it.

Connectivity is equally comprehensive, with a DisplayPort 1.4 DSC connection, two HDMI 2.1 ports, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and a headphone jack. A built-in KVM switch also allows a single keyboard and mouse to control two connected systems, which is particularly useful if you’re switching between a gaming PC and another device.

Many of the monitor’s settings can also be controlled through ASUS DisplayWidget Center rather than digging through the physical on-screen display. Alongside adjusting picture settings, it provides access to OLED protection features, firmware update notifications and the ability to import or export configurations.

It also includes the usual ASUS gaming features, including GamePlus and GameVisual, plus AI Visual, Dynamic Crosshair, and Dynamic Shadow Boost. AI Visual automatically detects what’s being displayed.

It adjusts the monitor settings accordingly, while Dynamic Crosshair changes the crosshair colour against different backgrounds, and Dynamic Shadow Boost can make darker areas easier to see. They’re certainly not features everyone will use, but they’re there for players who want them.

The ROG Strix OLED XG34WCDMS gaming monitor ticks an impressive number of boxes. The 34-inch ultrawide format provides an immersive gaming experience, while the 280Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time deliver beautifully smooth motion. More importantly, the Tandem RGB QD-OLED panel looks absolutely fantastic, producing incredibly clear images alongside the vibrant colours and deep blacks we’ve come to expect from OLED.
