Disney+ Quietly Cancels New Series Before Its First Season
    • Disney+ has decided to cancel plans for a live action reboot of the classic show Power Rangers, which was set up for development over a year ago.
    • The Power Rangers franchise, which originated from a Japanese live action series and became a cultural phenomenon in the 90s, is owned by Hasbro, who has been looking to get a live-action series adaptation off the ground.
    • The decision to cancel the Power Rangers reboot was primarily due to budget-related reasons, as the economics of producing a high-end, live-action superhero series were not as favorable when the streamer and/or producing studio do not own the intellectual property.

A highly-anticipated property from Disney+ is no longer in the works after the streaming giant opted to cancel plans for a live action reboot of a classic show.

The Power Rangers created an American media megahit with its first iteration: Might Morphin Power Rangers, which debuted in 1993. After adapting itself from a Japanese live action series, the Power Rangers became a cultural phenomenon which ingrained itself into every fabric of a 90s kid’s life.

About 18 months ago, those 90s kids were ecstatic to learn that a live action reboot of the show was in the works at Disney+, but their dreams were crushed this week.

Disney+ Cancels Plans for ‘Power Rangers’ Live Action Reboot

Deadline revealed the live action reboot won’t be coming to a TV near you any longer.

“According toey are business- (aka budget-) related. Mounting a high-end, live-action superhero series of the caliber of Power Rangers is a major investment, the economics of which are not as favorable when the streamer and/or the producing studio do not own the IP, which is the case here,” Deadline wrote

“The Power Rangers brand is owned by Hasbro, which has been looking to get a live-action series adaptation off the ground, with Netflix taking a crack at it several years ago.”

The project was written and executive produced by Percy Jackson and the Olympians executive producers/showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz and was set up for development at the Disney streamer well over a year ago.

90s kids will have to wait before their favorite characters return – if they ever do.
