Munna Bhaiya is back, and this time, the Mirzapurfavourite is trading the OTT screen for the big screen. Divyenndu is reprising his much-loved role in Mirzapur: The Movie, and while fans are eagerly waiting to see the character unleash his trademark bhaukaal in cinemas, the actor admits that returning to such an iconic role comes with its own mix of excitement and nerves.
Divyenndu on playing Munna
The actor, who became synonymous with Munna Bhaiya after the Mirzapurseries, says his approach to characters has always been about finding the human being underneath the larger-than-life persona.
Speaking about his process, Divyenndu said he feels fortunate to have been trusted with author-backed characters throughout his career. For him, the key to making a character memorable is not simply playing up its obvious traits, but making it relatable and human.
“I always try to make them more relatable and human, and not just take the easy way out to explore the character,” he shared.
The actor added that he enjoys taking risks with his performances and experimenting with characters. According to Divyenndu, audiences have rewarded him for that willingness to step outside his comfort zone.
That instinct played a major role in shaping Munna Bhaiya, a character who could have easily been reduced to his violent and unpredictable side. Instead, Divyenndu brought vulnerability, humour and emotional chaos to the gangster, helping turn him into one of the most recognisable characters in Indian streaming.
Divyenndu admits to be nervous
Returning to Munna for a theatrical outing, however, is an entirely different proposition. Divyenndu admits that he is excited but also nervous about how audiences will react to seeing the character back on screen.
“To come back with the film, it’s like how life comes full circle. I’m both excited and nervous at the same time,” he said.
The actor’s biggest concern appears to be whether he has done justice to a character that has already developed a massive fan following.
Yet, despite the pressure, Divyenndu knows exactly who this comeback belongs to. “So, it’s a bag full of emotions but above everything, I think this one is just for the fans,” he said.
Mirzapur: The Movie brings back several familiar faces from the franchise, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Ravi Kishan, as the battle for power enters a new arena.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and the film is set to release in cinemas on September 4, promising fans a much bigger dose of bhaukaal on the big screen
