    Twitch Lets Streamers Opt Out of Amazon AI Training, but Keeps It Enabled by Default

    Wednesday, 12 August 2026, 23:23

    A new Twitch setting gives creators more control, but the company’s default choice has sparked a sharp backlash from its own community.

    Twitch is introducing a setting that allows streamers to prevent Amazon from using material from their channels to train generative AI models. However, this option remains enabled by default: creators must disable it themselves in their channel settings.

    For Amazon, stream recordings could be a valuable dataset encompassing video, audio, creators’ voices, and lengthy broadcasts. Some Twitch users have expressed concern that their content may be included in training data without prior explicit consent.

    Streamers criticize automatic enrollment

    During a broadcast on Twitch’s official channel, community leader Mary Kish and product director Mike Minton answered viewers’ questions. Nearly 3,000 people were watching simultaneously, while users in the chat criticized generative AI and insisted that participation in the program should be voluntary.

    Why isn’t this opt-in? That’s what everyone is spamming in the chat. I understand: “Let me opt in myself instead of making me opt out.” Well, there’s an honest answer… If it were opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s the honest answer.

    – Mike Minton during the Twitch broadcast

    Twitch described the change as an option to opt out of having channel content used to train generative models within Amazon. This wording prompted questions from the community about whether stream recordings had previously been used to train AI.

    I honestly don’t know the answer to that question because I don’t know what Amazon […] has done in terms of training models and what they have or have not used.

    How to disable the use of Twitch content for Amazon AI training

    Mary Kish emphasized that Twitch is not the only service that views user-created material as a ree opt-out option was introduced in response to the community’s position that it does not want its content used to train generative models

    To prevent Amazon from using channel material to train generative AI, a streamer needs to take the following steps:

    • open their own channel settings, rather than the creator dashboard;
    • go to the safety and privacy section;
    • find the “training for generative AI” setting;
    • turn off the corresponding toggle.

    If this setting is not changed, channel content will remain available for use in training Amazon’s generative AI models.
