Man arrested after stealing over $100K in gold, silver from Vermont comic book shop, police say

A Vermont man is in custody after police said he stole more than $100,000 in gold and silver bars and coins from a local comic book and card shop.
The Berlin Police Department said officers responded to Wonder Cards and Comics on US Route 302 in Berlin following a burglar alarm activation on Saturday morning. Investigators learned that a person had broken into the store through a second-story window, stolen merchandise and then fled on foot on the nearby rail tracks.
The business owner reported that $20,000 in silver had been stolen. Police later recovered $10,000 worth of silver coins and bars that had been dropped on the tracks as the burglar escaped.
Police used video surveillance from the area to determine that a maroon Jeep may have been used in the burglary. They were able to trace the Jeep back to James Schultz, 40, of Elmira, NY.
Investigators said they believe Schultz also stole large amounts of gold and silver from the store in previous burglaries in July and August. The total amount of gold and silver stolen is believed to be over $100,000, police said.
Schultz was arrested on a burglary charge and appeared before a judge on Wednesday afternoon.
