Iman Vellani’s solo writing debut, Chachu #1, is making a significant splash at Image Comics. The buzz around the five-issue miniseries—produced by Tiny Onion—has been so immense that the debut issue has officially sold out at the distributor level. To meet the high demand, Image Comics has announced that the series will be rushed back to print this week.
The project, which saw Vellani team up with fan-favorite artist Marianna Ignazzi (Exquisite Corpses, Self Help) and multi-Eisner Award-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (Absolute Wonder Woman, Redlands), takes a fresh look at the classic neo-noir private investigator genre.
Inspired by Vellani’s own experiences coming of age in the entertainment industry, Chachu is set in 1979. The story follows Leila, a 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian film enthusiast who travels to California to find her estranged uncle—a semi-retired PI known for marrying the starlet he was originally hired to locate. When the uncle’s wife goes missing again, the duo sets off on an impromptu road trip that forces them to confront family secrets, unresolved grief, and the complicated fantasies they’ve built their lives around.
Readers eager to get their hands on a copy won’t have to wait long. The second printing of Chachu #1 is scheduled to hit local comic shops on Wednesday, September 2.
