After three decades, nine main installments, and numerous spin-offs, Capcom continues to find ways to keep the Resident Evil franchise relevant. So much so that even after multiple flops in its adaptations for the big and small screens, this year we’ll be able to enjoy a new movie directed by Zach Cregger. The director, known for horror films like ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian’, has revealed which video game has terrified him the most in his entire life—and, unsurprisingly, it’s a ‘Resident Evil’ game.
It was ComicBook that asked Cregger which video game—other than Resident Evil—had scared him the most. However, the director plays it safe and returns to the franchise he’ll be adapting in just a couple of months.
“I thinkResident Evil 8 has the scariest sequence of any video game I’ve ever played,” says Cregger, referring to the scene at the House Beneviento. “So I mean I have to kind of have to kneel before the, what am I saying? Kneel before the king, but I just think the Resident Evil franchise is the scariest.”

In fact, Cregger says he’s actually played it in virtual reality, and it certainly seems like he wouldn’t do it again. “I think it’s the best one, and there’s a sequence in 8, I played in VR, and I was just like I can’t handle it. I had to stop. It’s so intense,” he admits.
What is the movie ‘Resident Evil’ about?
Although Cregger is a well-known name among horror movie fans, ‘Resident Evil’ fans aren’t entirely thrilled with this adaptation, since it takes such liberties that it leaves out the series’ classic characters—such as Leon, Chris, and Claire, among others. Instead, it introduces an original character named Bryan, a medical supply deliveryman.
The plot follows Bryan as he makes an urgent delivery to the hospital in Raccoon City. That night, he finds himself caught in the midst of a biological outbreak and must survive among zombies, mutated creatures, and the chaos caused by the virus. As Cregger himself has explained, the film aims to recreate the experience of playing Resident Evil—exploration, scavenging for reing the complex timeline of the video games
