Surrey, B.C., is in the midst of one of the most ambitious building programs in its history, with four major investments in entertainment, education, recreation and transportation projects poised to reshape the city over the next decade.
From a new downtown arena that will become home to the Vancouver Giants to a massive community centre in Newton and the largest road project Surrey has ever undertaken, the developments are designed to support a city expected to continue growing rapidly in the years ahead.

The City Centre Arena and Cultural Event Centre is a proposed landmark project that will serve as the centrepiece of Surrey’s emerging downtown entertainment district. It is planned for the southwest corner of King George Boulevard and 104 Avenue, directly across from Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.
In addition to hockey, the facility will become a major regional destination for sports and entertainment.
The first phase of the project includes a 10,000-seat arena and public plaza capable of hosting hockey games, concerts, cultural performances, conventions and community celebrations.
Anticipated future phases will add a 250-room hotel, restaurants, a coffee shop, banquet facilities, spa services and residential towers with ground-floor retail space.
The arena is intended to become the anchor of a broader entertainment district in Surrey City Centre and help attract tourism, major events and private-sector investment.
Definitive agreements for the project are expected to be completed over the next year, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027.
Completion of the arena and hotel is targeted for 2030.
Just steps away from Surrey Central Station, another transformative project is beginning to take shape. Centre Block is a two-phase development planned for city-owned land beside the former North Surrey Recreation Centre.
The development will eventually provide two million square feet of office, institutional and retail space, dramatically increasing the amount of employment and educational space available in the downtown core.
Phase one will feature a 12-storey mixed-use building with street-level retail, office space and a shared lobby. Most notably, it will house Simon Fraser University’s Stephens Family School of Medicine, the first new medical school established in Western Canada in nearly 60 years. The medical school will occupy seven floors and include classrooms, research laboratories, clinical skills training facilities and an outpatient clinic.
In addition to supporting health care education, Centre Block is expected to strengthen Surrey’s role as an innovation and employment centre.
A public plaza adjacent to the SkyTrain station is also planned as part of the project.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion of the first phase anticipated in summer 2030.
One of Surrey’s largest-ever recreation investments is now moving forward in Newton. The $310.6-million Newton Community Centre will provide a modern recreation, culture and library hub for one of the city’s fastest-growing communities.
The 175,000-square-foot facility will be on the east side of King George Boulevard, south of Newton Arena and adjacent to the Newton Seniors Centre.
Plans call for a 50-metre competition pool, leisure pool, hot tub, cold pool and sauna as well as two full-sized gymnasiums, a fitness centre, child care spaces, arts programming areas and flexible community rooms.

Demolition work was completed in 2025, while site preparation and early works started this summer. Construction is scheduled to be completed in spring 2030.
The fourth project focuses on transportation infrastructure. The 72 Avenue improvements and extension project is the largest road investment in Surrey’s history and is expected to significantly improve east-west travel across the municipality.
The project will create a continuous transportation corridor stretching from 120 Street to 196 Street through multiple widening and extension projects. At its heart is a new five-kilometre extension connecting 152 Street with Highway 15.
The extension will feature four travel lanes and wide shoulders while providing stronger connections between Newton, Fleetwood, Clayton and Cloverdale. The city estimates the project will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion on routes such as Highway 10, 64 Avenue and 88 Avenue and accommodate growing demand.
Several portions of the corridor are already under construction. The major extension between 152 Street and Highway 15 is currently underway and is scheduled for completion in 2031.
