    • Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings (ASX:NEC) traded at $1.010, up 1.51% at the time of writing on 6 August 2026.
    • The stock traded between $0.985 and $1.020, with 6.02 million shares changing hands.
    • Nine secured NRL and NRLW broadcast rights for the 2028 to 2034 seasons under a seven-year agreement.
    • The agreement includes exclusive free-to-air and free streaming rights for selected NRL and NRLW matches.
    • Nine will pay $145 million annually in cash, offset by advertising commitments and contra arrangements.

Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings shares traded higher on Thursday as investors assessed the company’s recently announced extension of its National Rugby League (NRL) and National Women’s Rugby League (NRLW) broadcast partnership. At the time of writing on 6 August 2026, Nine shares were trading at $1.010, up $0.015 or 1.51% from the previous close of $0.995.

The share price movement followed Nine’s 7 July 2026 announcement that it had secured NRL and NRLW broadcast rights for the 2028 to 2034 seasons. The agreement extends Nine’s long-standing relationship with rugby league and forms part of its broader sports content portfolio.

NEC Share Price and Trading Activity

Nine Entertainment shares traded within a daily range of $0.985 to $1.020 during the session. Trading volume reached 6,022,603 shares, compared with the average volume of 4,834,103 shares.

The company’s 52-week share price range was between $0.835 and $1.900. Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange on 6 December 2013 and operates within the Media & Entertainment industry group.

Nine operates across television, streaming, publishing and digital media platforms, with sports content forming part of its broader audience and advertising offering.

Seven-Year NRL and NRLW Rights Agreement

On 7 July 2026, Nine announced an agreement securing NRL and NRLW broadcast rights from the 2028 season through to the 2034 season.

Under the agreement, Nine retains exclusive free-to-air and free streaming rights for three live NRL games each week, including Thursday and Friday evening matches and Sunday afternoon matches. The agreement also includes the NRL Finals series and Australian Test Matches.

The Grand Final and State of Origin matches will continue to be exclusively broadcast on Channel 9 and 9Now, with State of Origin matches remaining scheduled on Wednesday evenings.

For the women’s competition, Nine secured exclusive free-to-air and free streaming rights for 33 live NRLW weekly games, along with the NRLW Finals series and Women’s State of Origin.

    Financial Terms of the Agreement

The annual cost to Nine under the agreement will be $145 million in cash. This amount is offset by $10 million of committed annual spend by the NRL on advertising or other services, along with a further $15 million per year of contra arrangements.

Nine stated that the agreement extends its rugby league partnership into its fourth decade.

The company also noted that rugby league continued to perform within its media portfolio, with NRL broadcast and streaming audiences increasing across men’s and women’s competitions.

Sports Content Within Nine’s Media Strategy

Nine’s NRL agreement forms part of its broader investment in premium sports content. The company’s sports portfolio also includes rights across tennis, Olympic Games coverage, Premier League, Rugby Union, basketball, netball and other sporting events.

Sports broadcasting provides media companies with live content that can support audience engagement across broadcast and streaming platforms.

Nine stated that NRL and NRLW content contributes to audience connections and advertising opportunities across its ecosystem.

    Advertising and Audience Considerations

Nine’s broadcast operations are influenced by audience trends, advertising demand and the performance of its content portfolio.

The company noted that rugby league delivered double-digit revenue growth during the 2025 season compared with 2024. The long-term rights agreement provides Nine with continued access to NRL content through multiple platforms, including Channel 9 and 9Now.

The financial contribution from the agreement will depend on audience performance, advertising conditions, content monetisation and operating costs over the contract period.

Nine Entertainment’s share price movement occurred while the broader Australian market traded higher. The S&P/ASX 200 (ASX:XJO) closed at 9,271.6 points, gaining 0.47% during the session, while the S&P/ASX 300 (ASX:XKO) also increased by 0.47%.

NEC shares moved higher during the session while major Australian equity indices recorded gains.

Future updates from Nine may focus on audience trends across broadcast and streaming platforms, advertising market conditions and progress in integrating premium sports content across its media channels.

The NRL and NRLW agreement provides long-term access to rugby league content, while the financial outcome will depend on the company’s ability to monetise audiences through advertising, streaming and related services.

Nine Entertainment Co. shares traded at $1.010, up 1.51% at the time of writing on 6 August 2026. The company’s latest major update was the seven-year NRL and NRLW broadcast rights agreement covering the 2028 to 2034 seasons.

The agreement includes free-to-air and free streaming rights across key competitions, with Nine committing annual cash payments of $145 million, partly offset by advertising and contra arrangements.
