Set in 1980s Los Angeles, The Shards follows Bret, a 17-year-old aspiring writer attending an elite private school. His life begins to unravel when mysterious new student Robert Mallory arrives shortly before their senior year. Robert’s appearance coincides with the growing threat of The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers across the city. As Bret becomes increasingly focused on his new classmate, the distinction between what is happening and what he imagines begins to blur.
The series is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel and is created by Ellis alongside Ryan Murphy.

Igby Rigney (The Midnight Club) leads the cast as Bret, with Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Kaia Gerber (American Horror Stories) as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. CultureCues Final Thoughts
For CultureCues, the combination of 1980s Los Angeles and a killer moving closer to a group of privileged teenagers has all the ingredients for a new weekly obsession. Robert’s arrival immediately gives viewers someone to question, but Bret’s increasingly unreliable view of events means nobody should be trusted too quickly. Releasing the story across six weeks should also give everyone time to pick apart each clue before the finale. Detective hats on, because we know you can never trust the hot new guy.
The Shards begins with two episodes on Disney+ in the UK on 6 August 2026.
