FX’s new psychological drama The Shards has arrived on Disney+ in the UK, but viewers will not be able to watch the entire season immediately. The series begins with a two-episode premiere today Thursday, 6 August, followed by weekly releases across the next five weeks. Some dates include two episodes, with the nine-part season reaching its finale on Thursday, 10 September 2026.

Is The Shards Released Weekly on Disney+?

Yes, The Shards follows a weekly release schedule rather than arriving as a complete box set. The first two episodes will be available together on 6 August, with another double release following on 13 August. Episodes 6 and 7 will also arrive together later in the season. The episodes are expected to become available from around 2am BST, matching the 9pm ET FX and Hulu release in the US. Disney+ has confirmed each UK release date but has not separately announced an exact streaming time.

    When Does The Shards Finish?

The The Shards finale will be released on Disney+ in the UK on Thursday, 10 September 2026. The nine-episode season will therefore unfold across six weeks, with several double-episode releases moving the story forward more quickly than a standard weekly schedule.

What Is the Full The Shards Episode Schedule?

The confirmed UK Disney+ schedule is:
    Thursday, 6 August – Episode 1, ‘Pilot’
Thursday, 6 August – Episode 2, ‘Don’t You Want Me’
Thursday, 13 August – Episode 3, ‘Help Me! Rhonda!’
    Thursday, 13 August – Episode 4, ‘Robert’s Party’
Thursday, 20 August – Episode 5, ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’
Thursday, 27 August – Episode 6, ‘Homecoming Part One’
Thursday, 27 August – Episode 7, ‘Homecoming Part Two’
    Thursday, 3 September – Episode 8, ‘Hamlet’
Thursday, 10 September – Episode 9, ‘Stairway to Heaven’ – Finale

    What Is The Shards About?

Set in 1980s Los Angeles, The Shards follows Bret, a 17-year-old aspiring writer attending an elite private school. His life begins to unravel when mysterious new student Robert Mallory arrives shortly before their senior year. Robert’s appearance coincides with the growing threat of The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers across the city. As Bret becomes increasingly focused on his new classmate, the distinction between what is happening and what he imagines begins to blur.

The series is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel and is created by Ellis alongside Ryan Murphy.

Who Is in The Shards Cast?

Igby Rigney (The Midnight Club) leads the cast as Bret, with Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Kaia Gerber (American Horror Stories) as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. The adult cast includes Wes Bentley (Yellowstone, American Horror Story) as Hollywood producer Terry Schaffer, Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) as Liz Schaffer and Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt. Daniel Dale and Owen Painter also appear as Ryan Vaugn and Matt Kelner.

Where Can You Watch The Shards in the UK?

The Shards is available exclusively on Disney+ in the UK. The series airs on FX and streams through Hulu in the US one day earlier, beginning on Wednesday, 5 August.

    CultureCues Final Thoughts

For CultureCues, the combination of 1980s Los Angeles and a killer moving closer to a group of privileged teenagers has all the ingredients for a new weekly obsession. Robert’s arrival immediately gives viewers someone to question, but Bret’s increasingly unreliable view of events means nobody should be trusted too quickly. Releasing the story across six weeks should also give everyone time to pick apart each clue before the finale. Detective hats on, because we know you can never trust the hot new guy.

The Shards begins with two episodes on Disney+ in the UK on 6 August 2026.

Nikki Murray is a UK-based writer, screenwriter and founder & editor of CultureCues, covering film, television, music and pop culture. Her work focuses on storytelling and the moments shaping modern entertainment.
