Several of the new TV shows and movies being released on streamers like Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, Paramount+ and Crave in August have Canadian connections. From Sterling Point coming to Prime Video, filmed and set in Ontario, to Camp Rock 3 filmed in British Columbia and coming to Disney+, and Dark Matter returning for Season 2 on Apple TV, starring Canadian actor Amanda Brugel.
Lots of favourite titles are coming back in August, including the final season of Outer Banks on Netflix, Ted Lasso Season 4 on Apple TV, Lioness Season 3 and The Challenge Season 42, both on Paramount+. But for brand new movies and TV shows to watch, Don’t Say Good Luckon Netflix is a highlight of the month, along with the new Ryan Murphy series The Shards coming to Disney+, The Last Sunrise, the adaptation of Anna Todd’s novel, premiering on Prime Video, and the latest DC Studios project, Lanterns, coming to Crave in Canada.

Don’t Say Good Luck — Aug. 14
Already set to be a Netflix favourite is Don’t Say Good Luck. The film is centred around Sophie Birenbaum, played by Sunny Sandler, getting ready to star in her high school musical. But when she finds out her mom is sick, she has to navigate her own teenage experience with concern for her mom’s health, and her family’s future.
The film also stars Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Jack Champion, Stephanie Beatriz and Steve Buscemi.
Outer Banks, Season 5 — Aug. 20
If you’re an Outer Banks fan, you’ve likely been emotional all week because we got the trailer the show’s final season. It picks up after John B (Chase Stokes), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) lost JJ (Rudy Pankow) at the end of Season 4.
Everyone, including Rafe (Drew Starkey), is at rock bottom, but could JJ return? There’s a moment in the trailer where Kiara says there’s a legend that “the crown can bring back the dead,” so we’ll see where their quest to take down Groff ends up.

The Shards — Aug. 5
There’s a new Ryan Murphy series to dive into in August with the release of The Shards, starring Kaia Gerber, Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Graham Campbell, Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood and Jordan Roth.
Set in 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows high school seniors at an elite prep school while there’s the threat of “The Trawler,” a serial killer targeting teens in the city.
Camp Rock 3 — Aug. 13
It’s been 16 years since the last Canada-filmed Camp Rockmovie was released, but now the story is continuing with Camp Rock 3, filmed in British Columbia.
The film begins as Connect 3, the fictional band with members played by Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas, don’t have an opening act for their reunion tour, prompting them to return to Camp Rock to find a great upcoming talent to fill the spot.

Sterling Point — Aug. 5
Created by Canadian talent Megan Park, who’s a co-showrunner alongside the iconic TV duo that brought us The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage,it’s the perfect team to bring us out next streaming fixation.
Filmed in and around Muskoka, Ont., we first meet 17-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) in New York, where she lives with her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo) and their adoptive father, Steven (Jay Duplass). But when Annie unexpectedly finds out she’s inherited an island in Canada from her grandfather, the father of her adoptive mother who died when she was young, Annie travels to Canada, where family secrets are revealed.
The Last Sunrise — Aug. 26
Starring Maia Reficco, Fernando Lindez and Eva Longoria, Anna Todd’s novel has gotten an on-screen film adaptation. Directed by Carlson Young, the movie follow Ry (Reficco), a college student with a chronic illness, whose summer trip to Mallorca with her mom, played by Longoria, takes an unexpected turn when she meeting Julián (Lindez).

Ted Lasso, Season 4 — Aug. 5
While we initially thought Season 3 would be the end of Ted Lasso,the beloved season is back for Season 4, beginning as the title character, played by Jason Sudeikis, returned to Kansas City. But when he’s presented with the opportunity to coach Richmond’s women’s soccer team, he’s back in the U.K., working with Rebecca (Jason Sudeikis), Keeley (Juno Temple), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), and a new teams of players.
Dark Matter, Season 2 — Aug. 28
In Season 2 of Dark Matter, the Dessens are settling into quiet life, “until the unimaginable forces them to run once again,” with Daniela’s (Jennifer Connelly) paranoia growing as Jason continues to be obsessed with the box. Meanwhile, Amanda (Alice Braga) and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) are trying to find their way home, and Blair (Amanda Brugel), is working to stop Leighton (Dayo Okeniyi) in his attempt to execute his vision of “creating the perfect world.”

What to watch on Paramount+: New TV shows and movies
Lioness, Season 3 — Aug. 2
Taylor Sheridan’s series starring Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman and Laysla De Oliveira returns, with Ukrainian-Canadian actor Elizaveta Neretin joining the cast, as Joe (Saldaña) has to face the threat of “enemies lurking in the shadows.”
The Challenge, Season 42 — Aug. 5
The legacy TV competition series The Challenge is back for Season 42, featuring some of the strongest challengers in the show’s history. Taking place in Thailand, 24 compeititors, a mix of vets and rookies, are in the running for the US$500,000 grand prize, but they have to cross the finish line as a team.
The cast includes CT Tamburello, Johnny Bananas, Cara Maria Sorbello, Tori Deal, Brad Fiorenza, Nelson Thomas, Cory Wharton, Michele Fitzgerald, and rookies from Big Brother, Love Island, and Survivor.

What to watch on Crave: New TV shows and movies
Anna Pigeon — Aug. 8
Directed by Back to the Futureand Some Kind of Wonderful star Lea Thompson, working with showrunner Canadian Morwyn Brebner, Anna Pigeon is based on the mystery series by Nevada Barr. If follows the title character, played by Canadian actor Tracy Spiridakos, becomes a park ranger after experiencing a devastating loss, trying to focus her attention on solving crimes on national park grounds.
Lanters — Aug. 16
A new series from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, Lanters, starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as John Stewart (Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Chandler). In the trailer, as John asks Hal, “What do you know about manhunters?” We get a tease the new threat entering the DCU.
The series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

Paris is Always a Good Idea — Aug. 2
Starring Lacey Chabert, Paris is Always a Good Idea is about Chelsea Martin, a nonprofit executive who travels to the French capital with her “rival-turned-ally” Jason Knightly (Scott Michael Foster) to get a major donation. But Chelsea ends up on an unexpected journey to “reconnect with the three great loves she once left behind.”

A Poet — Aug. 7
Directed by Simón Mesa Soto, following it’s premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, A Poet will be released on Mubi. Oscar (Ubeimar Rios) is a poet who meets a teenager, Yurlady (Rebeca Andrade), who he starts mentoring.
