Digital Foundry has taken a closer look at the new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to see how it’s improved from a technical standpoint, with the analysis covering frame rate, resolution, and more. We also get to see how it compares to the original Nintendo Switch release.

Here’s the full roundup of tidbits:

    – Better edge detail, better edge stability, and better texture details on Switch 2
Pixel count suggests the game is still running at 720p internally, which would normally implied that it’s upscaled with DLSS
    – However, it looks like there’s temporal upsampling
    – May be some smart spatial upscaling to get to a more 4k-like final image
    – Another possibility is a different upscaler is being used
    – Grass now seems to be higher resolution and is more liberally placed
    – Depth of field can appear deeper with less blur
    – Bloom seems to be lessened on Switch 2
    – Ambient occlusion tends to be more localized
    – There’s even one shot that appears to be substantially relit
    – Texture details resolve more quickly on Switch 2, which may come down to just image quality improvements and possibly better texture filtering
    – Looks like pre-rendered sequences have a higher bitrate
    – Xenoblade 2 on Switch 1 ran at 30 FPS with some dips during traversal plus dips in cutscenes
    – Switch 2 is mostly at 60 FPS, but with peppering of dropped frames during traversal and alpha heavy moments and cutscenes
    – There’s use of double buffer vsync, so if frames go over budget, the game drops to 33 millisecond frame delivery until the additional load is relieved
    – In portable mode, Xenoblade 2 on Switch 1 ran at 360p and had an aggressive sharpening filter
    – Handheld mode in the Switch 2 version is 1080p-like with good image treatment and stable edges
    – Handheld mode on Switch 2 seems to render internally at 468p or so
    – There may be a line artifact issue in handheld mode
    – 60 FPS in handheld mode now as well, but with similar dips that are in docked mode

    Technical Analysis

While everything above focuses on technical improvements, there’s also a pretty notable improvement that was made which impacts gameplay. We covered that news here. Also, beware that players have found a couple of issues.
