Marvel used one of its San Diego Comic-Con panels on Saturday to unveil the visual identity of its new horror imprint, the Midnight Universe line.
However, writers Jonathan Hickman, Benjamin Percy, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and editors C.B. Cebulski, Jordan D. White, Dan Buckley,and Nick Lowe(moderator) made clear from the stage that story specifics are staying locked up until the books actually ship.
The headline reveal was less about plot and more about presentation: Marvel is launching the line with “cloaked” #1 covers that show only a sliver of art on the shelf, fully “uncloaked” only after a reader takes the book home, and a one-time-only trick the publisher says won’t be repeated for future issues, so the mystery stays intact in stores going forward.
Beyond that gimmick, the panel was largely a showcase of cover art, variant programs, and character design work across the line’s three launch titles: Midnight Spider-Man, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight X-Men.
The announcements, in brief, included:
- Three titles, one connected universe. Midnight Spider-Man (Phillip Kennedy Johnson), Midnight Fantastic Four (Benjamin Percy), and Midnight X-Men (Jonathan Hickman) all launch on the first Wednesday of October. Editors confirmed that the books share a single universe, though they declined to say how or when the threads connect.
- Origin of the line. Buckley said the concept began earlier this year as a push to create stories “with horror in the front seat, superhero in the back,” and that he brought Hickman on first, who then recruited Percy and Johnson.
- The cloaked/uncloaked cover concept. Designed after a creative retreat built around mood boards, a TV-pilot-style process Buckley said he pushed for specifically to align tone across the line before art began. Cloaked #1 covers show only a fragment of the full image on the shelf; the complete art is revealed once the book is purchased. Marvel says this reveal treatment is exclusive to issue #1s across all three books.
- New interior art teams. Each series is being illustrated by two artists working collaboratively: Steve Beach and ScieTronc on Spider-Man (their work blends manga, European, and Korean influences, per the panel), Kev Walkeron Fantastic Four, and Matteo Della Fonte and Dike Ruan on Midnight X-Men.
- A full variant cover program was unveiled, including:
- Cover B: connecting horror-tinged location/architecture art, using the same visual approach across all three books each month.

- Cover C (“Midnight Special”): character-focused variants, spotlighting a different character each month, including a cover by Peach Momoko and Skan.

- Cover D (“Midnight Horror Homage”): riffs on classic horror movie, video game, book, or Marvel Comics imagery.

- Cover E (“Midnight Gallery”): painted covers from a rotating slate of guest artists.

- Three-part connecting covers: appearing periodically rather than every month.
- Additional standard variant (“Cover I”) artists were named for each title, including at least one artist making their Marvel cover debut.
- Character/concept design art was shown for all three leads, including reworked looks for Spider-Man (drawing on WWII-aviator and boxing imagery), a body-horror redesign direction for the Fantastic Four, and new X-Men designs that included first looks at Nightcrawler and Storm.
- No crossover event confirmed. Asked directly whether an “Avengers” entry or a Midnight-wide event was coming, editors said only that the line’s expansion plans are further along than announced, but wouldn’t commit to specifics.
- Attendees received a black-and-white ashcan tied to the line, which Lowe said Marvel has done only rarely in his 24 years at the company.
Marvel came to SDCC ready to show off the Midnight Line’s look—covers, variants, and character designs in volume—while keeping an unusually tight lid on plot. Every attempt from the audience to get details on story direction, character fates, or a possible team-up event was met with a version of “you’ll have to wait and see.”
Every attempt, that is, but one. The panel revealed one small tidbit: In the Midnight Universe, everyone is alone in facing internal and external struggles, unlike the teamwork ethos that prevailed in the Avengers.
Readers will get their first real answers when all three #1s hit stores.
