Earlier today, a massive PlayStation Network outage took services offline for thousandsof gamers worldwide, leaving them unable to sign into their accounts. Per reports on social media, this impacted the PlayStation Store, downloaded games, and any games that require a PlayStation Network connection.

However, at the time of writing, the PlayStation Network Status platform reflected no issues, even though Down Detector, as a representative example, showed thousands of complaints. I can verify that I’vebeen able to connect to the PlayStation Network, so this issue mayhave passed.

As of 20:00 BST, only the PlayStation Store was listed as being impacted on the PlayStation Status page.

    Is This The Digital Future?

Folks use situations like this as serious ammunition in the debate against all-digital gaming. Last month, Sony revealed that when January 2028 comes around, it will no longer print discs for new PlayStation games, which posed something of a dilemma for many in the wider gaming community.

Unfortunately, this is part and parcel of the evolution of the industry, and the numbers point to the overwhelming majority of new game sales being digital these days. That doesn’t mean the consumeris happy, of course.

Today, on July 24, the PlayStation Network experienced a global outage that affected many users trying to enjoy its services. They were rendered incapable of accessing their accounts, booting downloaded games, getting into the PlayStation Store, and using games with any online features, which, as you can imagine, left them in a state of turmoil.

While PlayStation didn’t directly address the outage, nor did the status page reflect any issues, manythousands of gamers flooded social media with complaints and went to platforms like Down Detector to report problems.

Users on the PS5 subreddit voiced their concerns about the outage, with many making quips about this being reflective of the dangers of an all-digital landscape.
