Shagufta Ali reveals why Govinda and Karisma Kapoor stopped working together: ‘They lost interest’

Shagufta Ali shared her thoughts on why Govinda and Karisma Kapoor stopped working together despite delivering several hits. She called Karisma hardworking but over-ambitious and said attitude and changing dynamics may have ended their successful pairing

Actors Govinda and Karisma Kapoorwere one of Bollywood’s most successful on-screen pairs, delivering several blockbuster comedies in the 1990s. However, their collaboration eventually came to an end. Now, actor Shagufta Ali, who worked with the duo in Hero No. 1, has shared her views on why the hit pairing stopped working together, attributing it to changing dynamics and Karisma’s attitude.

In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Shagufta revealed why the popular on-screen partnership of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor eventually came to an end despite delivering several successful films together. Shagufta said, “Interest khatam ho gaya hoga. Pyaar mohabbat khatam ho gaya hoga. Heroines ke mood ka bhi kya bharosa hai. Aur bahut zyada ambitious hona bhi achha nahi hai. Karisma over-ambitious thi. She was very hardworking, lekin attitude bhi bahut zyada tha (Perhaps they lost interest. Maybe the love and affection between them faded. You can never be sure about a heroine’s mood. And being overly ambitious isn’t always a good thing. Karisma was over-ambitious. She was very hardworking, but she also had a lot of attitude).”
Elaborating on what she meant, she added, “It was evident everywhere. The attitude you bring to the set and the way you behave make a difference too. If someone is your co-actor, there has to be give and take. Whether you’re doing a scene together or giving an interview, both people should get an equal chance to speak.”
Over the years, Govinda and Karisma worked together in several hit films, including Coolie No. 1, Shikari, Saajan Chale Sasural, Raja Babu, Hero No. 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, and more.
Shagufta praises Sunita Ahuja
The veteran actor also spoke warmly about Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, recalling meeting her during an outdoor shoot.
“Sunita came to an outdoor shoot once with the children. Even then, she hardly stepped out. She always treated everyone with love and respect. I never saw her create a scene on set.”
Referring to the rumours that have surrounded Govinda over the years, Shagufta praised Sunita for the way she handled the situation.
Karisma Kapoor’s recent work
Karisma was last seen in the series Brown. The psychological thriller featured her as a detective alongside Surya Sharma, Jisshu Sengupta, Soni Razdan, and Ajinkya Deo.
