A new Galaxy Express 999 theatrical anime film is officially in production. Although the franchise has produced numerous titles for special event screenings, this will be its first new theatrical anime since Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy was released in 1998, marking a return to theaters after 28 years.

Initial staff details have also been revealed. Rintaro, whose notable works include the 1979 film Galaxy Express 999 and the 2001 film Metropolis, is providing the original story concept. Animation production will be handled by Toei Animation, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Cast information will be announced at a later date.

The Story of Galaxy Express 999

Galaxy Express 999 is an epic science fiction manga created by Leiji Matsumoto.

The story is set on a future Earth where mechanical civilization has made extraordinary advances. Wealthy people have transformed themselves into machine bodies and enjoy eternal life, while the poor face persecution.

After losing his mother during a human hunt carried out by machine people, Tetsuro Hoshino sets out for a planet said to provide mechanical bodies free of charge. Accompanied by the mysterious and beautiful Maetel, he boards the Galaxy Express 999 and begins his journey across the galaxy.

The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen King from 1977 to 1981. It was adapted into a television anime that aired from 1978 to 1981, followed by its first theatrical anime film in 1979.

The series remains one of Japan’s most enduring masterpieces. In the anime, Masako Nozawa voiced protagonist Tetsuro Hoshino, while Masako Ikeda played Maetel.

Leiji Matsumoto’s Daughter Comments on the New Film

Makiko Matsumoto, Leiji Matsumoto’s eldest daughter and the representative director of Leijisha, the company founded by the Galaxy Express 999 creator, shared a message celebrating the announcement.

“Thank you all very much for waiting. Nearly half a century after the release of the theatrical film Galaxy Express 999, Toei Animation has now given us the opportunity to announce the new work that Matsumoto had long dreamed of creating.

“Producing animated films had been Matsumoto’s dream since childhood and the greatest goal of his life. That unwavering passion will continue forever, racing along the silver rails that wind through the distant galaxy.

“Matsumoto would surely be delighted by the miracle that allows us to continue this journey together with all of you. We hope you will look forward to the film’s release.”

Leiji Matsumoto Exhibition to Open in September

To commemorate the production of the new film, an exhibition tracing Matsumoto’s creative career will open at Kadokawa Culture Museum in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, on September 19.

The Leiji Matsumoto Exhibition will display more than 300 original artworks, including pieces from his early career and celebrated works such as Galaxy Express 999, Space Battleship Yamato, and Captain Harlock. Rare archival materials and personal belongings used by the artist will also be presented.
