There’s a lot going on, as usual, at San Diego Comic-Con. But in between all the noise and fury of the panels, announcements, and exclusives, there’s a mystery brewing: what the heck is up with those Latverian Witch costumes at the Marvel booth, and what do they mean for Avengers: Doomsday?
Look, there’s every chance that by tonight when Marvel takes over Hall H for their much hyped panel, we’ll have an answer to this question. But to take it back for some context, if you are reading this at home, or perhaps got lost in San Diego somewhere between the Rick and Morty activation and getting trained up to become a Green Lantern, here’s what’s been going down over the past few days.

Starting on Preview Night on Wednesday (July 22), Marvel revealed a fun surprise at their booth: costumes from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Those include a battle-worn Cyclops (James Marsden), a Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), a costume for Thor (Chris Hemsworth) which looks remarkably okay given he’s gone axe to pointer finger with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey, Jr.), Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and Gambit (Channing Tatum).
But in the midst of these costumes, all of which represent characters we saw in the recently released Avengers: Doomsday trailer, was one big head-scratcher: a Latverian Witch. What’s a Latverian Witch? Great question, we don’t really know. Or rather, we’ve got a slew of theories, and they’re based on the fact that not only is there a Latverian Witch in the movie… There are (as of this writing) at least three of them.
That’s because on Wednesday, the Latverian Witch costume was green. The next day, Thursday (July 23) it was yellow (or orange), with a different belt buckle and one chain hanging from its (her?) neck, instead of three, like the previous day. And on Friday (July 24) the costume changed again, to purple. Chances are it will change again (or has changed again depending on when you’re reading this), and we’ve got a pretty good idea what color(s) it may change to on Saturday and Sunday.
But let’s get into this a little further, because there are at least two big things you may be able to pick out from these seemingly innocuous costumes.
The first, and perhaps least spicy bit of info? It’s clear that Doctor Doom has some lieutenants working for or with him in some capacity. Just like Thanos with the Black Order, you need some sort of sub-bosses before everyone teams up to take out the main boss. And while it’s possible that Doom may be employing Doombots a la the comics, or perhaps just taking everyone down all by himself, the introduction of these Latverian Witches seems to imply there’s a coven of magic users working for him. It’s also not unimportant to mention that employing Witches – unless there’s a weird twist here and they’re working against him – means Doom is using magic, perhaps in addition to science. This is true to the comics, where he employs a mix of both; so likely merely by having a “Latverian Witch” costume at San Diego Comic-Con, we’ve got confirmation of magic Doom.
…That’s not what you’re curious about though, right? You want to know who the Latverian Witches are? And the thing is, there’s every chance they may in fact be characters we already know.
So, as you may be aware, Doomsday is packed to the brim with characters already, from the Fantastic Four and Wakandans to the X-Men and Thunderbolts* (*New Avengers). We’ve got Talokans, Asgardians, and even a bunch of children and Ant-Men wandering around. Given the multiversal cataclysm we’re likely getting in the movie, this makes a lot of sense. But what the presence of these Latverian Witches at SDCC pre-suppose is: what if there are even more characters?
Is it possible that the Latverian Witch masks are also hiding other familiar faces behind their metal facades? And if so, who might they be?
One reason for thinking this? The costumes are masked, and hands covered, same as Doctor Doom. Since we have yet to discover why Doom has the same face as our beloved Tony Stark in the movie, is it possible that the Latverian Witch masks are also hiding other familiar faces behind their metal facades? And if so, who might they be?
The colors, let’s be honest, are a pretty good indicator. To work backwards here, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) is intimately associated with purple, so if these LWs (Latverian Witches) are indeed recognizable characters, it’s more than likely the purple one is Agatha. Before we get too far, the follow up question here is: which Witch is which? Meaning, is this the Agatha Harkness of the MCU, who was last seen as a ghost hanging out with Wiccan (Joe Locke) in Agatha All Along? Likely not, and since we don’t know what universe Doom is from, though he’s likely hailing from Earth-828, home of the Fantastic Four, this could be that universe’s version of Agatha. It also could be a neat bit of connection, as in the Marvel Comics Agatha was sometimes baby-sitter for Franklin, Sue and Reed’s (Pedro Pascal) kid, who Doom shows a ton of interest in during the Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene. Alternatively, this could be Clea (Charlize Theron), who was only briefly seen in the end credits to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, as she is a magic user and also wears purple.
To jump back to the first costume, the green Witch has a different costume than the other two that have been shown off as of this writing… She has three chains, as mentioned, and a belt buckle, which seems to imply she’s in charge. At first glance, the buckle might look in the same vein as the Eye of Agamotto, the mystical relic Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) uses, which could indicate perhaps the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Alternately? Another character who uses magic and is tied to the color green is Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), the female variant of Loki. If this is Sylvie, well, she was left in Loki Season 2 not knowing what she was going to do next, and seemingly able to traverse timelines. So this seems like a likelier suspect than the Ancient One, and it merely could be Sylvie finding a new purpose helping Doom. Though there is one other possibility: Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), aka the Green Witch from Agatha All Along, aka Death. Rio seems a little less likely just because she’s, you know, the avatar of Death, so what is she doing working for Doom? But hey, the color scheme works.
Let’s go to the head-scratcher, the yellow LW. Or orange LW – it’s hard to tell with the lighting. Turning to Agatha’s coven from Agatha All Along, Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) uses orange magic, while Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone) uses yellow magic. Nothing against either actress, particularly the legendary Patti Lupone, but if these Witches are surprise characters it might make less of an impact for general audiences if they’re all Agatha’s coven, versus an array of faces from various properties (meaning Sylvie, Agatha, etc.). So if it’s not Alice of Lilia, then who? Again, we could go back to the Ancient One, who used orange magic courtesy of the Sling Ring.
…But there’s one more aspect of this we need to discuss that perhaps points to a completely different way this color scheme could work: they’re all Infinity Stones.
What do we mean by “they’re all Infinity Stones”? Merely that the colors of the Latverian Witches, thus far, match the colors of Time (green), Power (purple), and Soul (orange)… Unless it’s yellow for the Mind Stone, but can we just say orange, jeez louise. Point being, there are three more colors to go, and two days left of Comic-Con (again, as of this writing). We’ve got Blue for the Mind Stone, and Red for the Reality Stone. As established in both Loki and What If…? the Infinity Stones exist in every universe. That means they exist in the Fantastic Four’s universe as well, and assuming Doctor Doom is from there, is it possible that he gave one Infinity Stone to each of his six Witches (or one to each of his five Witches, and kept one for himself)? Sure! Maybe!
Whatever is going on with this color scheme, it matches the color of the Infinity Stones, and given you’ve got the Russos – the guys who directed Infinity War and Endgame – at the helm of Doomsday, that doesn’t seem to be a coincidence.
Okay, fine, there actually is one more thing we need to discuss, since it seems more than likely there are at least two more colors to go, and more than likely one of those colors is red. Aka, scarlet. So if there are Latverian Witches, and one is a scarlet Witch… Is it THE Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)? When last we saw our Wanda Maximoff, she was being crushed by Mount Wundagore, with Doctor Strange pretty conclusively saying that she died. But death is just a temporary reprieve in the MCU. There could be an alternate Wanda, or Wanda could have been snatched out of the timestream by Doom – or Loki? – moments before death. And even if it’s just a moment at the end of Doomsday, it seems like an enormous missed opportunity, if you do have a masked, red Witch for it to not be Wanda. To take it further, if Marvel puts a masked, red Witch in their movie, and it’snot Wanda, Marvel fans in movie theaters are going to make the Battle of New York look like a minor scuffle.
So will Marvel really bring back Wanda, and create a whole coven of witches working for Doom that are surprise guest stars to be revealed on screen? Will those witches also have Infinity Stones, and be the key to perhaps allowing Doom to create Battleworld in Secret Wars? Or maybe these are just fun costumes from one scene in the movie that Marvel thought would look nice at their booth. Either way, we’ll likely know more once Kevin Feige and company take the stage in Hall H. Until then? We can hold out hope that a couple of potentially randomly colored costumes mean Wanda Maximoff is coming back to us.
