June was a surprisingly good month for Xbox console sales, which have been in a pretty bad spot for a while now. Some of that was due to this time last year being exceptionally tough thanks to the launch of the Switch 2, but it also seems like folks are trying to get ahead of yet another major price hike coming up in August.
According to the monthly report from Circana, video game content spending was down by 12 percent year-over-year, but year-to-date spending is flat. Subscriptions were the only segment to grow year-over-year, while all others declined, especially mobile and console. UFC 6 debuted at No.1 in June, and was also the best-selling game on PlayStation. It was followed overall by Meccha Chameleon, which Circana estimates sold around 4 million copies. Star Fox debuted at No.4, and was the best-selling game on Nintendo platforms for the month.

Circana’s Mat Piscatella also tells me that The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales debuted at No.15 overall (“which was a great start”). Final Fantasy VII Rebirth jumped to No.12 for the month up from No.142 in May thanks to the release of the Xbox and Switch 2 versions last month. And the Remake & Rebirth Twin Pack also did well for the same reason, jumping from No.277 in May to No.36 in June.
For the year so far, Resident Evil Requiem remains the best-selling game, followed by Crimson Desert. 007 First Light rose to No.3 last month, surpassing MLB The Show 26.
Hardware spending overall was down 62 percent year-over-year in June, to $383 million. It’s a big drop, but not a surprising one: last year was the Switch 2 launch, and that launch helped set a record for most hardware spending in a June month with a whopping $1 billion. There was no way we were getting anywhere near that this June. Switch 2 hardware spending specifically was down 79 percent year-over-year, but was still the best-selling system in both units and dollars for both the month and 2026 so far.
I asked Piscatella just how bad this drop for hardware overall was, one year out from the Switch 2 launch, and it turns out it’s not that bad at all. He told me that the Switch 2 was “holding pretty well,” and added that the U.S. install base of the Switch 2 is still 11 percent ahead of the original Switch on a time-aligned basis. And overall hardware spending is also fine—it’s up compared to June 2024 ($0.29 billion) and down slightly from June 2023 ($0.46 billion). So, very average.
PlayStation spending was down 19 percent, but it was the second-best-selling system in both unit and dollar sales for June. The Xbox, however, saw a big improvement over last year, with spending more than doubling. Piscatella tells me that price increases and the Switch 2 launch this time last year combined to make it a rough June 2025 for Xbox, but as a result, unit sales this month were 86 percent higher year-over-year, and June’s the biggest month for Xbox this year so far. The average price was also 13 percent higher, though, and Xbox was still ranked third overall in both dollar and unit sales for the month.
Accessories spending was down 21 percent compared to a year ago in June. Overall, video game spending in the U.S. reached $4.5 billion for June, down 21 percent year-over-year. For the year so far, spending is just 1 percent behind where 2025 was at this time.
