Australian comic to perform show in Kamloops to cap off first-ever Canadian comedy tour and holiday

Vanessa Larry Mitchell is mixing business with pleasure — and it’s all for a good laugh.

The Australian comedian is coming to Kamloops this Saturday, July 25, as part of her first ever visit to Canada, which is doubling as both a comedy tour and vacation.

She’ll be at the Sagebrush Theatre performing her hit, adult-only standup show Teardrops on my Dildo, which she has been touring for five years now as part of her Amazing Comedy Tour.

Speaking with Castanet, Mitchell said she’s nervous, but excited about the trip, having almost no knowledge of The Great White North.

Mitchell has a group of fans from Australia in tow on her Canadian tour, who are coming along with her to take in some shows and tourist activities at various stops as a holiday — the result of a friend’s crazy suggestion.

“We’re like tour guides, only we don’t know anything, we’re just going to be fun,” she said with a laugh.

Kamloops is the final stop one what will be a five-city comedy tour that began in Montreal and Toronto on July 9 and 10, and wraps this week in the Tournament Capital following July 22 and 24 dates in Whistler and Vancouver.

After Kamloops, the vacation portion continues as the group will holiday in Lake Louise and Jasper.

Born and raised on a sheep farm in central Victoria, Mitchell got into comedy about 10 years ago while worked as a training facilitator at a technical school.

She took a comedy workshop on a whim just to see if she liked it and fell in love with the craft.

The 46-year-old single mother of two adult children said she initially didn’t see comedy as a career, but has been performing her show full-time now for the past five years.

She used to run open mic nights until the COVID-19 pandemic put those on hiatus. When a lot of her facilitator work navigated online post-pandemic, she decided to put all her eggs into the comedy basket, perfecting her now two-hour comedy show.

“And it’s just really taken off, so it’s a bit of a dream,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell’s comedy covers her trials and tribulations of parenting, dating and all aspects of being a woman.

She said her show is exposing, with personal stories and is all about female empowerment — but not in a pushy way.

“It’s more just allowing people to be themselves and be free,” she said. “It brings out the beast in me, and a lot of women feel really free after watching the show — and men love it. Men love watching women just be really open and honest as well.”

Mitchell said the show isn’t for everyone, noting the title separates those who should come see the show from those who won’t.

“[If] people laugh when they see the title, I think they know that they’ll love the show. If people are horrified or offended by the title, then they really should not come to the show,” she said.

Mitchell’s comedy show in Kamloops starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are available online.
