Christopher Nolan is taking a well-deserved break after completing one of the most ambitious projects of his career. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has revealed that he plans to step away from directing for at least three years following the release of The Odyssey, admitting that the scale and demands of the epic film pushed him and his team to their limits.

In a recent interview with Today, Nolan opened up about the physically challenging experience of bringing Homer’s legendary Greek epic to the big screen. The director said that the demanding production tested the endurance of everyone involved, including himself.
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think,” Nolan shared.

The Odyssey achieves IMAX milestone
Apart from its massive scale, The Odyssey also marks a significant technical achievement for Nolan. The film became the first commercial feature to be shot entirely using IMAX cameras, a format the director has frequently championed throughout his career.
Since IMAX cameras are larger and more complex than traditional filmmaking equipment, the production team had to develop new techniques to capture Nolan’s vision. The filmmaker revealed that he approached the IMAX team with the belief that if any story deserved to be filmed entirely in the format, it wasThe Odyssey.
Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the film follows King Odysseus’ decade-long journey back home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway portrays Penelope and Tom Holland stars as their son Telemachus.
The film features a star-studded ensemble cast including Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso and Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
Released in theatres on July 17, 2026, the nearly three-hour epic also marked Nolan’s latest collaboration with his longtime producer and wife Emma Thomas. The filmmaker, along with Matt Damon and Tom Holland, attended the film’s grand Mumbai premiere during their India visit.
While The Odyssey continues to draw attention for its scale and cinematic ambition, Nolan’s decision to take a break signals a rare pause in the career of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers.
