SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Comic enthusiasts can head to the San Diego bayfront this weekend and race against their favorite superheroes or villains on a stand-up paddleboard.
Ahead of San Diego’s famed Comic-Con, the Sheraton Resort on Harbor Island is hosting the race on Sunday, July 19.
Participants will paddle their way through a one-mile course in the SUPer Hero Show Down, vying for the top prizes in the Fastest Racer, Best Super Costume and Best Sidekick categories.
The course follows the shoreline by the Lanai Lawn and Spanish Landing Park, and participants are encouraged to wear costumes. You do have to be 18 or older to participate.
Tickets are $35, while spectators can stop by for free to cheer people on. Parking at the resort is free.
All proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit Fisher House Southern California, Inc., which provides housing for military and veteran families during times of medical need. There are two Fisher houses located at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Winners will be given prizes for taking the top spot, including a free one-night stay at the Sheraton for the fastest paddleboarder.
There will also be food and drinks available for purchase for those who choose to watch from the shoreline.
