Mega Mawile is an incredibly powerful Mega-Evolved Pokémon that can output lots of damage due to its Ability, Huge Power. However, Mega Mawile suffers from some weaknesses that make it challenging to use effectively. It has a low Speed stat, it’s weak against some popular Pokémon including Mega Charizard Y and Incineroar, and it lacks strong ways to deal with rain teams, which are more common since the addition of Mega Swampert to Regulation M-B. Even so, Mega Mawile has a storied history in the Video Game Championships, and shouldn’t be counted out today! Let’s find out how it can anchor a powerful team.

Active carousel item 1 of 2.

    Mega Mawile Team Overview

Mega Mawile is typically not a Pokémon that can function as the sole Mega Evolution on a strong team, so adding a secondary Mega-Evolved Pokémon for flexibility is essential to create a team that cannot be easily countered. Mega Charizard Y is the perfect Mega Evolution for this role, providing excellent pressure against opposing rain teams with its weather-changing Ability and Solar Beam, while providing the tools to build a faster alternate strategy to Mawile’s low Speed. This extra option makes team preview trickier for opponents.

Our next issue to address is threats to Mawile from Fire types. Garchomp is an excellent option due to its powerful Earthquake for Pokémon like Incineroar and Rock Slide for the omnipresent Mega Charizard Y.

Mega Mawile operates better when it leans into its low Speed stat. By adding Farigiraf to the team, we not only provide ourselves with protection against moves with increased priority, but we give ourselves a Trick Room option to let Mega Mawile dish out major damage before most opposing Pokémon can attack. Farigiraf’s Helping Hand also allows for even higher damage output from our attackers.

With our core four decided, it’s important that the last two slots round out our fast and slow modes. We also need to address the general lack of coverage against Water-type Pokémon, so Venusaur is an excellent addition to the team. It provides Leaf Storm for Water types, Sleep Powder to throw out quick status due to Chlorophyll activating with Mega Charizard Y’s Drought, and Sludge Bomb for additional pressure on Fairy types.

Incineroar is the glue the team needs, providing Intimidate and Fake Out to flesh out both our fast mode with Charizard, Venusaur, and Garchomp, while also supporting the slower Trick Room mode with Mega Mawile and Farigiraf. Flare Blitz in sun also outputs heavy damage, allowing our Incineroar to be a legitimate damage dealer as well.

    The Team

    Mawile

    Stat Points: 32 HP / 32 Attack / 1 Defense / 1 Sp. Def

Stat Alignment: Brave (Attack +, Speed −)

Moves: Play Rough, Sucker Punch, Rock Slide, Protect

Mega Mawile uses Play Rough to dispatch many threats in the format like Sylveon, Mega Floette, and Garchomp. It’s able to give up having a Steel-type coverage move due to how favorable its matchup already is against opposing Fairy types. That frees up a slot for Rock Slide, an excellent option against Fire types for maximum efficiency in Trick Room, while Sucker Punch lets Mawile throw out damage with increased priority to pick off Pokémon with low HP or premier targets like Basculegion. Protect is of course an excellent option to reposition.

Mawile is trained to maximize its strength in Trick Room, using a Brave stat alignment to ensure it moves slower than most Kingambit and all Incineroar until Trick Room is set up.

    Charizard

    Stat Points: 16 HP / 18 Defense / 21 Sp. Atk / 11 Speed

Stat Alignment: Modest (Sp. Atk +, Attack −)

Moves: Heat Wave, Weather Ball, Solar Beam, Protect

Mega Charizard Y runs a fairly standard set, taking full advantage of its Drought Ability to create harsh sunlight and power up its moves. Heat Wave provides strong spread Fire-type damage, Weather Ball provides strong single-target Fire-type damage, and Solar Beam can heavily damage opposing Water types. Protect is again an excellent option to round out its moveset.

Charizard uses the Modest stat alignment with a lot of investment in Sp. Atk to maximize damage output. Its training lets it outspeed all Adamant Basculegion and survive Rock Slide from non-Life Orb Garchomp.

    Farigiraf

    Stat Points: 28 HP / 13 Defense / 10 Sp. Atk / 15 Sp. Def

Stat Alignment: Modest (Sp. Atk +, Attack −)

Moves: Psychic, Thunderbolt, Helping Hand, Trick Room

Farigiraf also uses fairly standard coverage moves, with Psychic leveraging its same-type attack bonus and Thunderbolt giving it an excellent check against Water types and Mega Charizard Y. As mentioned earlier, Helping Hand provides excellent support to boost its teammates’ damage, and Trick Room is the perfect option to enable Mega Mawile and counter Tailwind teams.

Farigiraf’s training allows it to survive a Weather Ball from a Modest Charizard Y or a Mystic Water-boosted Wave Crash from max Attack Adamant Basculegion, so Farigiraf can consistently set up Trick Room. Colbur Berry combined with this stat point distribution means Farigiraf can even reliably take powerful Dark-type attacks that would otherwise knock it out, such as Kowtow Cleave from Kingambit or Knock Off from Mega Tyranitar.

    Garchomp

    Stat Points: 31 Attack / 3 Defense / 32 Speed

Stat Alignment: Jolly (Speed +, Sp. Atk −)

Moves: Dragon Claw, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Protect

Garchomp is also running its standard coverage—Dragon Claw for Garchomp and other Dragon-type opponents, Earthquake for powerful spread damage next to our Mega Charizard Y, and Rock Slide for opposing Mega Charizard Y and an alternative spread option that doesn’t hit our own teammates.

Garchomp’s Defense investment lets it survive a Dragon Claw from non-Life Orb Garchomp, while its Attack training and Life Orb let it reliably KO Mega Charizard Y and non-bulky Garchomp opponents. It’s essential to be max Speed for the Garchomp mirror to be successful.

    Venusaur

    Stat Points: 2 HP / 32 Sp. Atk / 32 Speed

Stat Alignment: Modest (Sp. Atk +, Attack −)

Moves: Leaf Storm, Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, Protect

Venusaur’s Focus Sash lets it forego bulk, instead adding maxed-out Speed and Sp. Atk to its Modest stat alignment. This allows Venusaur to outspeed non-Choice Scarf Adamant Basculegion, meaning that so long as the sun is out and activating Venusaur’s Chlorophyll, Venusaur will move first even if the other side has Tailwind up.

    Incineroar

    Stat Points: 30 HP / 6 Attack / 9 Defense / 20 Sp. Def / 1 Speed

Stat Alignment: Careful (Sp. Def +, Sp. Atk −)

Moves: Flare Blitz, Darkest Lariat, Parting Shot, Fake Out

Incineroar runs its standard moveset of Flare Blitz, Darkest Lariat, Parting Shot, and Fake Out. The HP and Defense training combined with Sitrus Berry gives Incineroar a good chance to survive two Earthquake attacks from Life Orb Garchomp or a Light of Ruin from Modest Mega Floette. The 6 Attack investment allows Incineroar to KO most Kingambit in sun with Flare Blitz.

    Mega Mawile Team Tips

This team is based on forcing the opponent to respect multiple approaches, giving you lots of control over team preview. The two most powerful leads are Incineroar + Farigiraf to get up Trick Room reliably, or Venusaur + Charizard to inflict immediate heavy damage and Sleep Powder. These leads are quite complementary because the tools required to beat them are vastly different. Here are some game plans you can utilize!

    • Lead: Incineroar + Farigiraf
    • Back: Mega Mawile + Garchomp

This plan is generally strong for setting up a good Trick Room scenario for Mega Mawile. Garchomp acts as a late-game sweeper once Trick Room expires, or can be used earlier if you opt not to set Trick Room turn one and instead attack with Farigiraf and use Parting Shot with Incineroar (although Trick Room is normally advised for most situations).

    • Lead: Charizard + Venusaur
    • Back: Incineroar or Farigiraf + Garchomp

This game plan centers around exerting early pressure with your sun mode, which is typically most effective against teams without reliable answers for Sleep Powder or against weather-based teams without a Mega-Evolving Pokémon as their weather setter. Incineroar and Garchomp provide reliable switches to reset weather if needed, and Garchomp is an excellent option for the Fire types that Charizard and Venusaur might struggle against.

    • Lead: Mega Charizard Y + Garchomp
    • Back: Venusaur + Incineroar

This game plan is stronger against teams that do not have great responses to double spread move spam, with a back line Venusaur that can use its increased Speed from Chlorophyll to pick off Pokémon left at low HP. Incineroar provides a safe switch in the back as well.

    • Lead: Venusaur + Incineroar
    • Back: Farigiraf + Mawile or Garchomp + Mega Charizard Y

Leading Incineroar and Venusaur can be pretty obnoxious against a couple of strategies, forcing the opponent to try to respond to Fake Out + Sleep Powder, Protect + Parting Shot, and more. This lead is typically used to land Sleep Powder early to safely get up Trick Room with Farigiraf for Mawile, or to enable Garchomp and Mega Charizard Y to sweep from the back.

    • Lead: Incineroar + Garchomp
    • Back: Farigiraf + Mawile or Charizard

This approach is strong for using early Garchomp pressure to quickly dispatch something that might present more issues for Mega Mawile or Mega Charizard Y (usually opposing Garchomp), and getting a Parting Shot off to position your Pokémon in front of an offensively weakened opponent.

This team will give you lots of options to take advantage of the pressure Mega Mawile can exert in team preview, forcing your opponent to make some big decisions about which of your modes they expect. Mega Mawile is at its best when it can complement another powerful Mega Evolution, making this team very strongly suited for Ranked Battles!
