Collectors heading to San Diego Comic-Con this month have a narrow window to claim two limited DC variant covers at no extra cost — and the clock starts the moment the exhibit hall opens July 23. CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) and JSA (James Spence Authentication) published their finalized SDCC 2026 booth plans today, confirming booth assignments, a full signing schedule, and a pair of exclusive DC variant covers for Batman #1 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, each illustrated by Harvey Award-nominated cover artist John Tyler Christopher and each capped at 1,500 copies. Both covers are free with any collectible grading submission at Booths #301 and #4315 — while supplies last.

With 130,000 badge-holders spread across four convention days and 1,500 copies per cover to distribute, the math favors early attendance: roughly one copy per 87 attendees, which makes Thursday the strategic day to arrive if these exclusives are a priority

CGC Is the Only Major Comic Grading Service at SDCC This Year

The broader context for this year’s CGC booth matters to any collector weighing whether an SDCC grading submission is worthwhile. CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service), which operated as CGC’s primary competitor since 2014, stopped accepting new submissions on April 17, 2026, after its parent company Collectors Holdings announced it would shut down the comic grading division to concentrate on its Beckett brand and PSA operations. The Certified Collectibles Group — CGC’s parent organization — has certified more than 110 million collectibles since 1987 across coins, banknotes, comics, cards, autographs, and stamps; CGC Comics, its flagship grading division for comic books, has operated since 2000 and remains the only major third-party grading company for comics with a national census and a Signature Series witnessed-authentication program.

For collectors, this means an SDCC grading submission is no longer a choice between two comparable services. It is a choice about whether to participate in CGC’s census at all — and SDCC is one of the few opportunities to do so with CGC witnesses physically present for same-day Signature Series authentication

    New Booth Layout

CGC’s floor presence is reorganized for 2026. The company will operate at Booth #301 and Booth #5500, both near the Silver and Gold Pavilion, with the CGC Signature Series remaining in Artist Alley at Booth #4315 per its official SDCC announcement. The split setup separates general grading submissions and exclusive merchandise from the witnessed-signature authentication workflow — a distinction that matters operationally for collectors who plan to submit items for Signature Series status, since the authentication witness must be physically present at the signing and those witnesses are stationed at Booth #4315 in Artist Alley.

DC Variant Covers: What Collectors Need to Know

The two variant covers are the most time-sensitive items at the CGC booth:

    • Batman #1 — variant cover by John Tyler Christopher
    • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — variant cover by John Tyler Christopher

Both are free with any collectible submission for grading at Booth #301 or Booth #4315, available while supplies last. The 1,500-copy ceiling per cover is a soft scarcity floor by SDCC standards — Scott’s Collectables’ virgin edition of Something Is Killing the Children #49 this year is limited to 250 copies — but it is meaningfully small for a show this size

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cover carries additional cultural context. The DC miniseries by Tom King and Bilquis Evely (2021–22), an Eisner-nominated limited series, served as the direct source material for the DCU film Supergirl, which received a theatrical release on June 26, 2026. The film grossed approximately $116 million against a $170–186 million production budget, a commercially disappointing result — but collector interest in the comic series that originated the DCU character tends to be driven by the source material’s critical reputation rather than the film’s box office performance. John Tyler Christopher’s variant is a new illustration of the character, not a reprint of the Tom King/Bilquis Evely series art.

John Tyler Christopher is best known in the collector market for his action figure-style variant covers, which render comic characters in the style of blister-card toy packaging. Christopher’s convention-exclusive variants have historically commanded secondary market premiums, and a CGC-graded copy with his witnessed Signature Series autograph represents the highest provenance tier available for this cover

Collectors planning to secure a signature on the variant should note that Christopher’s in-booth signing sessions are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, 1–2 p.m. PT at Booth #5500 per CGC’s official show schedule. Collectors wanting a Signature Series label on a signed copy should note that CGC’s authentication witnesses are stationed at Booth #4315 in Artist Alley — coordinating a submission at that location before or after the signing at Booth #5500 is required for a fully witnessed, graded example.

Pin Tour Returns to Booth #5500

CGC’s annual Pin Tour — a scavenger-hunt-style rewards program that runs across multiple conventions — returns at Booth #5500 per the CGC official announcement. Submitting any item for grading at the show earns three items: an exclusive SDCC submission pin, a Pin Tour lanyard, and a CGC Scratch-Off Ticket redeemable for grading discounts and membership perks

    The accumulation mechanics:

    • Collect any three show-exclusive submission pins from participating tour stops → receive Tour Pin #1
    • Collect all six submission pins (covering all tour stops) → receive Tour Pin #2

This year’s remaining tour stops after SDCC are Baltimore Comic-Con (September 25–27) and New York Comic Con (October 8–11). Pins were also available earlier in the year at MegaCon, C2E2, and HeroesCon

CGC will also run free standalone pin giveaways at the booth, limited to one per person per show — no submission required for the standalone giveaway

    Free Pre-Screening With CGC Experts

For collectors who want a professional opinion before committing to a grading submission, CGC is offering free pre-screening of comics and cards on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PT at Booth #5500 per the SDCC 2026 schedule. The sessions are staffed by CGC President Matt Nelson, Vice President of Comics Grading Shawn Caffrey, and card grader John D’Amico — the same staff who lead the Raw to Slab panel later in the week

Pre-screening is useful for collectors uncertain whether a book is in grading-worthy condition; knowing in advance that a book is likely to grade at 9.6 vs. 9.4 can affect whether the submission cost is worth the expected market premium

The Rick & Morty Saturday morning signing is likely to generate the longest queue. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden took over the roles of Rick and Morty following the 2023 recasting of the principal voice cast, and Spencer Grammer has voiced Summer Smith throughout the series’ run. Saturday morning slots at SDCC tend to fill early

David Matranga’s two-day signing window (Friday and Saturday) gives more attendees a realistic shot at a graded signature. Matranga voices Shoto Todoroki in the English dub of My Hero Academia and has also voiced Hideki Hinata in Angel Beats and Genjo Sanzo in Saiyuki

Joe Simko’s Sunday signing is the only free signing at the CGC booth this year — no grading submission required

    Additional Booth Activities

    • Golden Egg Mystery Box Hunt: Follow CGC on Instagram for daily hints posted in stories during and before the show. Limited to one egg per person per show.
    • Mothra Foil Card: Submit any Abominable Toys card for CGC grading at Booth #301 to receive a free Mothra foil card (some will be graded — first come, first served).
    • CRANIACS Scavenger Hunt: The CRANIACS puzzle hunt includes a piece locatable at Booth #5500; Joe Simko’s Sunday signing ties into the CRANIACS universe.
    • Cybercel Promo Card: Free Avatar: The Last Airbender Cybercel promo card included with any card grading submission per the CGC SDCC event page.

Raw to Slab Panel — Saturday 4:30 p.m. PT, Room 26AB

CGC hosts a Raw to Slab panel on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT in Room 26AB, led by Matt Nelson and Shawn Caffrey, as listed in the SDCC schedule. The session is aimed at collectors newer to the grading process, walking through what happens between dropping off a raw book at the show and receiving a fully encapsulated, graded slab — including submission form preparation, how grading tiers work, and what the Signature Series label certifies. For attendees considering their first on-site submission, attending this panel before visiting the booth is a logical sequence.

Graded Market Context: One Major Player Now

The combination of on-site submissions, exclusive variants, and witnessed signatures — all documented through CGC’s Signature Series label — gives SDCC-acquired items a provenance trail that is difficult to replicate through mail-in submissions. For the Batman #1 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow variant covers specifically, a 1,500-copy ceiling combined with a John Tyler Christopher signature and CGC grading creates a documented scarcity tier whose ceiling value depends on how many copies end up submitted for grading vs. traded raw.

CBCS’s April 2026 closure makes CGC’s SDCC presence structurally different from prior years. In past seasons, collectors could route submissions through CBCS if CGC’s turnaround times or pricing were unattractive. That option no longer exists. CGC’s Modern tier submission runs $30 per comic, with standard turnaround times currently listed at 45 working days for mail-in submissions — but on-site submissions at SDCC are processed at CGC’s Sarasota headquarters after the show, at standard fee rates. The exclusive variants acquired at the show are the on-site benefit; the certification happens on the back end.

Whether the secondary market reacts to the Supergirl variant as sharply as it has to prior CGC SDCC exclusives will partly depend on how many of the 1,500 copies move on the show floor raw versus how many are submitted for grading. A large population of graded 9.8 copies would compress the premium; a small submitted population would preserve it. SDCC 2026 runs July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the CGC exclusive DC variant covers at SDCC 2026?

Both the Batman #1 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow variant covers by John Tyler Christopher are free with any collectible grading submission at CGC Booth #301 or Booth #4315 (Artist Alley) during SDCC 2026. No purchase is required beyond the standard CGC grading fee for whatever item you choose to submit. Both covers are limited to 1,500 copies each, so arriving early — ideally Thursday — gives the best chance of securing one before supplies run out

Is there a fee for the CGC grading submission to get the free variant cover?

Yes. The variant covers are free, but they require a grading submission, which carries CGC’s standard submission fees. For comics at the Modern tier, that is $30 per book. CGC also offers cards, video games, home video, and memorabilia submissions. The free variant cover is the bonus for submitting — it is not a stand-alone giveaway. For fee details and service tiers, CGC’s fee schedule is available at cgccomics.com

What is the CGC Pin Tour, and do I have to pay to participate?

The CGC Pin Tour is a multi-convention rewards program. Submitting any item for grading at any participating tour stop earns an exclusive show submission pin, a Pin Tour lanyard, and a CGC Scratch-Off Ticket. Collect pins from any three participating shows to earn Tour Pin #1; collect all six to earn Tour Pin #2. Participation requires a grading submission — the pin is the reward for submitting, not a standalone giveaway. The remaining 2026 tour stops after SDCC are Baltimore Comic-Con (September 25–27) and NYCC (October 8–11) per the CGC official schedule.

Why does CGC’s SDCC presence matter more in 2026 than in prior years?

CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service), CGC’s main competitor for comics grading since 2014, shut down in April 2026 after its parent company Collectors Holdings decided to consolidate around the Beckett brand and PSA. CGC is now the dominant third-party grading company for comics, with no equivalent competitor for convention-floor same-day submission and Signature Series witnessed authentication. For collectors who want an on-site, witnessed grading submission at SDCC, CGC’s booth is no longer one of two options — it is the only option. The CBR report on the closure confirmed the shutdown was announced March 24, 2026.
