    • The original cast of the 1988 film Young Guns reunites at Fan Expo Dallas, including Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney, and Casey Siemaszko.
    • Young Guns, directed by Christopher Cain and written by John Fusco, revitalized the Western genre in the late ’80s by offering a fast-paced, rebellious take on the story of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Regulators.
    • Fan Expo Dallas provides fans with the opportunity to meet the ensemble cast, get autographs, take professional photos, and enjoy special appearances during the three-day convention at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Westerns had been around for decades before Young Guns, but the 1988 film gave the genre a very different kind of energy. With Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney, and Casey Siemaszko leading the cast, the movie turned a familiar Old West story into something faster, younger, and considerably more rebellious.

Now, 38 years after the film first hit theaters, much of that original cast is back together in Dallas.

Fan Expo Dallas is hosting a rareYoung Gunsreunion this weekend, bringing together Estevez, Sutherland, Sheen, Phillips, Mulroney, and Siemaszko. The three-day convention began Friday, September 11, and wraps up Sunday, September 13, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

The Western That Made the Genre Cool Again

Directed by Christopher Cain and Young Guns offered a fictionalized take on Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Regulators. Estevez played Billy, while Sheen portrayed Dick Brewer, Sutherland played Doc Scurlock, and Phillips took on Jose Chavez y Chavez

The movie arrived during a period when the Western was no longer the dominant force it was in the heyday of the Duke and Eastwood. CBR even credited Young Guns (and Charlie Sheen) with making the Western genre cool again, paving the way for Tombstone. After all, the movie’s combination of historical characters, fast-paced action, humor, and a cast of young stars gave the traditional Western a distinctly ’80s makeover.

That approach proved effective. Young Gunsbecame a box-office success and helped establish its ensemble as one of the most memorable groups of young actors in Hollywood. Its popularity also led to Young Guns II, which brought back much of the original cast in 1990.

The movie’s appeal was never entirely about historical accuracy. Instead, it leaned into action, attitude, humor, and the chemistry between its ensemble cast. Nearly four decades later, that formula still holds up for fans who continue to quote the movie and debate which Regulator was the fastest draw.

The Regulators Are Back in Dallas

The reunion is one of the most complete gatherings of the original cast in years. Fans attending Fan Expo Dallas this weekend have the opportunity to see Estevez, Sutherland, Sheen, Phillips, Mulroney, and Siemaszko together, along with opportunities for autographs, professional photo sessions, and special appearances.

Fan Expo Dallas runs through Sunday, September 13, giving fans one final day to catch the Young Guns reunion before the Regulators ride out of town.
