The comic con is organized by Colossus Girl Entertainment and will feature special guests, including headliner Kelli Maroney, known for playing the cheerleader Cindy Carr in the iconic 1980’s movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” as well as the gun-toting cheerleader Samantha Belmont in the ’80s cult classic zombie apocalypse film “Night of the Comet.”
“This year, we’re bringing back a few things. We’re bringing back community panels where local artists and cosplayers do panels on their work that they might be into or that the community is into,” said Dave Haworth, president of business operations for Meadowlark Comic Con. “Every actor and celebrity guest there, they will each have panels and you’ll be able to go to the panels and listen to things about the genre, their movies or career.”
“They only come once so if you have any collectibles from movies, now’s a good time to get them signed and autographed,” Haworth added
Guests also include Reno Wilson, who played officer Carl McMillan on the hit show “Mike and Molly” as well as guest starring in “Dexter: Original Sin,” “Heist,” “Blind Justice” and more, as well as Charlie Schlatter, who played Dr. Jesse Travis in the CBS series “Diagnosis: Murder” and a titular character in “Kick Buttkowski: Suburban Daredevil.”
Meadowlark Comic Con’s guest list expands further to include multiple talented artists in a variety of disciplines, including the multi-talented James Pax, who starred in iconic film “Big Trouble in Little China,” and who is also a director, screenwriter and novelist; Dave Warren, former animation artist for “The Simpsons” and “Pinky and The Brain;” comic book artist Luis Rivera; comic book letterer Warren Montgomery; and author, actress and activist Tonya Todd
There will be multiple talented cosplayers at the event such as LoveCherryCosplay, TheFaustianSpider, Vickipixiecosplay and Rat King Cosplay
Beyond the guests, Meadowlark will include lots of vendors offering all kinds of goods from a variety of media and fandoms — from anime and movies to comic books and trading cards
“This year, we have a good mix and variety of vendors that have been there previously and vendors that are brand-new to Southern Oregon,” Haworth said. “A lot of it is anime stuff, official products, vintage toys, lots of comic books, everything you would expect and a lot of local artists.”
While not confirmed yet, the event’s organizers are hoping to bring back retro video game vendors, as well
Another big part of Meadowlark that attendees look forward to each year are the cosplay contests, which feature a variety of competitions, each with different parameters to participate. Winners receive cash prizes
“I look forward to people dressing up in cosplay and outfits, and families getting together and spending their time at Meadowlark,” Haworth said of one of his favorite parts
A key focus for the organizers is providing space for local and regional artists to showcase their work without diluting the comic con with artificial intelligence art
“We do not allow any AI artwork at the comic con; there can’t be AI artists, and that’s something we’ve done since day one,” Haworth said. “We make sure the artwork is from actual artists; we want artists with real talent and we want to support them.”
“We’ve seen a lot of events using a lot of AI advertisements (and promotional materials) and that’s one thing that we will never do; we always hire an artist and have them do the work … all our exclusive stickers and posters are all original artwork,” he said
Approaching its ninth year of operation this year, Meadowlark Comic Con is the oldest and longest running comic con in the region
The event even drew out Medford’s mayor, Michael Zarosinski, last year
“Hopefully we’ll see the mayor again this year; I think he had a good time and it gave me the opportunity to plug in some talk (about a future convention center),” Haworth said, noting his desire for a convention center venue in Southern Oregon
