Cape Town set for week of sport, culture and entertainment

Cape Town is preparing for a packed schedule of entertainment, sport and cultural activities, with thousands of residents and visitors expected to attend events ranging from esports competitions and rugby fixtures to fashion showcases and road races

The City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office has approved and is monitoring 12 events taking place across the city this week, with approximately 20,000 participants and spectators expected to attend

As highlighted by the City, the busiest period is expected over the weekend as several major gatherings take place simultaneously

Family entertainment and gaming take centre stage

School holiday entertainment remains a major attraction, with Disney on Ice: Mickey’s Search Party continuing its run at GrandWest

The production brings together popular Disney characters including Mickey, Minnie, Elsa, Moana, Miguel from Coco and Buzz Lightyear in a live skating performance featuring music, choreography and theatrical effects

Shows will take place at 11am and 3pm on Thursday and Friday, followed by performances at 11am, 2pm and 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Each show runs for about two hours, including a 15-minute interval, with doors opening one hour before the start

GrandWest will also become a hub for competitive gaming when the African Gaming Championship returns from 16 to 19 July

The second edition of the esports event will bring together leading African players competing across major gaming titles for a share of the R150,000 prize pool

The tournament will also feature the Nitro ASL Finals, where South Africa’s top school gaming teams will compete for championship honours and opportunities to qualify for international competitions, including the Carry1st Africa Cup and the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship

The event will offer free spectator entry, with competitions running daily from 9am until 5pm

    Rugby returns to DHL Stadium

Sports fans will turn their attention to DHL Stadium on Friday, 17 July, as DHL Stormers XXIII host defending Currie Cup champions Griquas

The match kicks off at 7:05pm, with stadium gates opening from 5:30pm

Motorists heading towards the stadium are advised that increased traffic volumes and temporary disruptions may affect roads including Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard

Khayelitsha Fashion Week celebrates local talent

The city’s creative sector will also take the spotlight when Khayelitsha Fashion Week returns for its 11th anniversary edition at the Artscape Theatre Centre on Saturday, 18 July

The showcase will feature emerging designers presenting their collections, while 45 aspiring models participate in the Mother City Fashion Experience

Ahead of the runway event, designers took part in skills-development workshops, while models completed professional training focused on runway preparation and industry development

This year’s competition places emphasis on sustainability, challenging designers to transform recycled and waste materials into new fashion pieces

The event runs from 1pm to 6pm, with tickets available through Webtickets

Runners prepare for Atlantic Seaboard routes

The weekend will conclude with the Cape Town Festival of Running, bringing two days of road-running action through some of the city’s most recognisable coastal areas

The 26th edition begins on Saturday with a 50km ultra-marathon through Green Point, Mouille Point and Sea Point, alongside a 5 x 5km team relay on the Sea Point Promenade

Sunday’s programme features a half marathon, with more than 1,000 runners expected to take part on a route passing through Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Camps Bay

Events begin at 7am on both days

Residents and visitors are advised that temporary traffic disruptions may occur along sections of the route, including Beach Road in Sea Point, Queens Road near Bantry Bay, Kloof Road and Victoria Road in Camps Bay

With multiple events happening across different parts of the city, organisers and officials are urging attendees to plan ahead, arrive early and consider possible travel delays
