A short documentary featuring Vice President Kamala Harris will be released just weeks before this year’s presidential election.
Filmmakers Samir Zakir and Gerald Pizarro co-direct Kamalaaims to share the untold story behind Harris’ journey through anecdotes, animations and interviews with famous entertainers, family members, close friends and leading politicians.
The project has yet to publicly announce a launch date, but it will hit theaters starting in October. Kamala It will then be available on PVOD and SVOD ahead of the presidential election on November 5, when Harris will face off against Donald Trump.
It’s unclear how many theaters the short film will be shown in, nor when it will be shown.
Bada Bing Pictures distributes short films produced by Illumin8 Entertainment and Pizarro Creative. Producers include CNN analyst Bakari Sellers, once the youngest member of the South Carolina Legislature and a friend of Harris. First-time directors Zakir and Pizarro will produce the short film alongside Wendy Pizarro.
“This film is not only about Kamala’s political journey, but also about her humanity. It’s about her being a joyful warrior who fights for the good of all,” Gerald Pizarro said in said in a statement. “As an underdog and a new filmmaker, I’m honored to tell the story of another underdog – a Black and Indian woman who broke barriers and inspired millions.”
Zakir is an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and is the CEO and co-founder of Illumin8 Entertainment, which supports programs focused on mental health and holistic wellness. Gerard Pizarro is a social justice advocate and former trial attorney who founded Pizarro Creative in part to spotlight the stories of underrepresented communities. Wendy Pizarro, also a former attorney, is a leader in health and wellness innovation.
Harris’ career includes serving as California’s attorney general before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. Vice President of the United States and accepted the Democratic nomination for President last week.
