10 Futuristic Sci-fi Shows To Watch If You Love ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’
What makes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners(2022) such a great show? Depending on who you ask, there can be a ton of different answers. Maybe you love it for Studio Trigger’s gorgeous animation. Then again, you could love it for how alive Night City is as a setting and how it oozes that cyberpunk aesthetic. Or maybe you just love good tragedies, because Cyberpunk: Edgerunnershas that in spades.
Regardless of your reason, it’s good to see the show return for a second season, but what happens when we have to say goodbye to Roman, Talia, King, and D? If you still need that sci-fi itch scratched, and you have streaming services like Crunchyroll and <a href="https://www.justwatch.com/us/provider/amazon-prime-video” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Prime Video, then have we got something for you to chrome up on. Some are cyberpunk action fests, sci-fi dramas, and even a handful of philosophical projects designed to make you think about technology and its increasing presence in our world. Trust me; this is the good stuff.

Nothing good ever comes from time travel. It takes a lot of skill to create a convincing story surrounding it, but 12 Monkeys is one of the few shows that was able to knock it out of the park.
Running for four seasons, 12 Monkeysmanages to make time travel work thanks to its sharp writing. Normally, the concept of temporal paradoxes, closed-loop timelines, and fitting all of that in a story that’s meant to take place over centuries can be overwhelming. However, the show’s pacing is tight and easy to follow. It spins a lot of plates, but somehow is able to deliver on virtually all of them and deliver one of the most elusive rarities in modern television: a good ending.

Altered Carbon is a victim of the streaming age. Running for two seasons, Altered Carbonfeatures a wonderful cyberpunk world ripe with the kind of commentary you would expect, but it was quickly canceled after declining viewership. It’s a shame, too, because that first season is absolutely excellent.
In a span of 10 episodes, Altered Carbonpresents a great classist cyberpunk tale spliced with a classic noir thriller. The idea of the ultra-rich digitizing their consciousness to live in perpetuity is a great hook, and it also allows a rotating cast of actors to tell a compelling murder mystery. Getting Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie to play the same character is a cool idea, and it makes Altered Carbonan ambitious series that ended before its time.

What’s more cyberpunk than a group of dangerous outlaws rebelling against the system? If you thought Cyberpunk: Edgerunnerswas the peak of anime punk attitude, then brother, you aren’t ready for Akudama Drive.
It’s a show that doesn’t hide the fact that its cast are, for the most part, horrible people out for themselves. While there’s a heaping helping of tragedy and death in this 12-episode anime, it never stops being fun. Like, an over-the-top kind of fun that gets the adrenaline pumping. It’s the epitome of an “eat the rich” attitude and is positively metal in how it delivers its message. Watching a dystopia fall apart has never been as metal as it is in Akudama Drive.

In a lot of ways, Blade Runner (1982) is the go-to example of a cyberpunk dystopia. The harsh city lights, the philosophical discussions on humanity, and its dour tone all scream cyberpunk, and Blade Runner: Black Lotus translates those ideas fairly well into a TV series.

Ask any otaku worth their salt about old-school sci-fi anime, and they’ll probably sing the praises of Bubblegum Crisis to the high heavens. And they have every reason to, because Bubblegum Crisis is not only one of the best cyberpunk anime of the ’80s, but maybe of all time.
The cyberpunk aesthetics are there, with the quartet of badass babes fighting against the corrupt Genom corporation and its Boomer byproducts. The show does a wonderful job balancing the darker cyberpunk moments with fun character beats, even if the original English dub is questionable at best. There’s plenty of charm to spare with Bubblegum Crisis, and it’s a crying shame the original series could only produce eight episodes instead of 13. And that soundtrack? Genuine earworms all around.

While Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersis known for its style, its sometimes poignant and melancholic tone can easily take viewers by surprise. If you want more artistry than action, consider giving Ergo Proxy a shot.
In an era when anime was dominated by Shonen action, Ergo Proxywas the kind of avant-garde sci-fi anime that is rarely made today. It’s a methodically placed post-apocalyptic drama that trusts its audience to handle the complex themes it’s presenting. In a way, Ergo Proxyis much like Wolf’s Rain (2003), since they can both be brutally depressing yet beautiful in their depiction of the end of the world, just with more murderous robots. Ergo Proxyis a thinking man’s sci-fi series, and while it may not be for everyone, it’s certainly memorable.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, whether it’s the first or second season, is steeped in tragedy. Very few people are left with happy endings, but Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is the master of making its characters suffer.
Turning Alexandre Dumas’ legendary tale of revenge into a futuristic sci-fi anime was, to say the least, a bold choice. What was once a Victorian drama somehow kept its setting and tone, but added giant robots, interstellar monsters, and wars that threaten the galaxy itself. But for all the darkness of Gakutsuou, there is a certain tenderness to it. There’s a romantic air that makes you hope against all hope that things will turn out well for everyone, but then again, nothing good ever comes from revenge.

While most futuristic sci-fi shows tend to focus on somewhat unrealistic concepts, what makes Pantheon such a captivating watch is how believable its premise is.
Over two seasons, Pantheon‘s cast contends with people uploading their memories and personalities to the cloud, which hits very close to home given how prevalent AI has become, for better or worse, in people’s lives. It doesn’t just use those ideas as a gimmick, though. Like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it explores the lingering consequences and reality in depth. What would such a world be like? Would people accept it, or not? Add in plenty of conspiracies to keep things interesting, and Pantheonbecomes an underrated gem that needs more attention.

Cyberpunk anime aren’t afraid to ask what it means to be human, and one series to explore that concept, as well as a whole host of other poignant themes about technology, has to be Serial Experiments Lain.
Sure, Lainmay not exactly fit the definition of “futuristic” (it literally begins with the phrase “present dat, present time”). Still, the way it tackles technology and its integration into our lives is exactly the kind of messaging that made films like Johnny Mnemonic (1995) fascinating to explore. Watching Lain slowly become one with the Wired is the kind of heady psychological drama that sci-fi shows, anime or not, aspire to be like, and it’s perfect for Cyberpunkfans looking for something a bit more esoteric.

Tron (1982) was an odd project for Disney. It is a cyberpunk series that never really knew what to do with itself, but while fans may know it for its three movies, its sole TV show, Tron: Uprising, is arguably the franchise’s best installment.
Rather than being solely a sci-fi adventure, Tron: Uprising spends most of its 19-episode season detailing what life is like in the Grid. It obviously connects to the first film and Tron: Legacy (2010), but Uprising focuses on its own story and fleshes out a society we’ve only had a surface-level understanding of. Add in a shockingly good voice cast, and you have a show that sorely needs a second season.
