Remaking the greatest game of all time was never going to be a slam dunk, but every gamer should be given the chance to experience The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time.
It’s an obligatory rite of passage, and Nintendo (rightly) decided that it was time to offer that sensation to the new era of gamers through the remake.
Whether you’re a new player or revisiting your childhood, the Ocarina of Time remake has pulled through on its promises and has quickly earned itself the highest rating of any game in the last decade on Metacritic. Justifiably exceptional.
But hidden among all the magic of discovering Link’s unwavering brilliance is one dangerous quirk that set an industry-wide standard that is still adhered to over 30 years later: the hidden trap that is the chicken.
That’s right, among all of the dastardly foes in Link’s path, including his own dark reflection and the brute Ganondorf, it’s the Cuccos that pose the biggest threat.
Now, as the new gen players enjoy their debut experience on Ocarina of Time, popular streamer iShowSpeed has epitomised the community after feeling the wrath that ensues after inflicting cruelty on the cluckers.
Never mess with the Cuccos
As Link journeys throughout Hyrule, observing life in the quaint villages is one of the sweetest pastimes. In a world with such big threats, it’s quite fun to see farmyard animals going about their everyday life in peace.
Yet, for some reason, players have often found switching off their combat instincts rather tough when presented with the hens, and Nintendo has followed through on its animal welfare checks in the remake. Speed found that out the hard way.
While live streaming his run-through of Ocarina of Time, the content creator fell into the oldest trap and gave a chicken a not-so-friendly bash, like many newbies to the game.
“Alright, chat, let me see if I can hit this thing. Chat, you can’t hit the chicken!” he said as he chased one down in Kakariko Village.
But, like many thousands of us have found out prior, a swarm of its feathered friends descended on Link and obliterated him to become Speed’s first death.
“Oh s**t, man, what the hell, KFC, man, what the hell? Hey bird!” he shouted.
“Bro, my first death was to a chicken?! A chicken! Fried chicken. Say on god I just died to a chicken!”
Unsurprisingly, Zelda fans found the whole thing hilarious, with many pointing out that this is practically a mandatory experience for anyone playing Ocarina of Time for the first time.
“All Zelda fans know not to tell first-time Zelda players about this. They need to find out the hard way. We all did,” one commenter joked.
“It’s crazy watching this generation experience this game for the first time,” another added.
And honestly, they’re not wrong. Some Zelda lessons simply have to be learned the hard way. Just remember, Speed: leave the chickens alone.
Much like many other features in Zelda, the chicken welfare program has extended far and wide, and players should always be wary of messing with the feathered friends.
