Adam Driver confirmed he won’t be part of HBO’s upcoming Girls reboot as one of the original characters Adam Sackler.
Asked if he’d come back, Driver kept it short in an interview with CinemaBlend while promoting his new film Paper Tiger, saying, “No, but I wish them the best of luck.”
HBO announced the limited, five-episode revival in October, with production set to begin in 2027, ten years after the show’s Season 6 finale. Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are all coming back.
Dunham is an executive producer along with Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen, and her four co-stars are co-executive producers. Not included in the press release were Driver and co-showrunner and executive producer Jenni Konner.
Driver played Adam Sackler, a part-time carpenter and actor who was Hannah’s on-and-off love interest in all six seasons from 2012 to 2017. The part became his breakthrough and earned him three Emmy nominations.
Driver’s answer comes after Dunham’s memoir Famesick, released in April. In it, she alleges Driver was “verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing” and hurled a chair against the wall beside her when she flubbed her lines.
Dunham previously talked about that time in an interview with The Guardian, SAYING,
“At the time, I didn’t have the skill to … it never entered my mind to say, ‘I am your boss, you can’t speak to me this way.'” She added that “at that point in my 20s, I still thought that’s what great male geniuses do: eviscerate you.”
Driver was asked about the memoir at Cannes in May while promoting Paper Tiger. He offered “no comment on any of that,” saying he was “saving it all for my book.”
The Girls revival goes into production in 2027. Paper Tiger, co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, opens in theaters Nov. 13.
