Star Wars will mark its 50th anniversary next year, and the Vancouver Canucks are getting in on the celebrations.
The first film in the science-fiction franchise was released in theatres on May 25, 1977. The Canucks will be celebrating the anniversary a little bit early, holding their Star Wars Night on Jan. 14 when they face the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Arena.
While the Kraken aren’t quite the evil Empire, the rebuilding Canucks are definitely a group of plucky underdogs like the ramshackle Rebel Alliance in A New Hope.
When Elias Pettersson is doing his dekes, he looks a little like a Jedi — he even played a Jedi in the Canucks’ pre-game film back in 2021 — but now that he’s a grizzled vet, he’s a little more Obi-Wan Kenobi than Luke Skywalker. Perhaps Jonathan Lekkerimäki can be his Padawan.
Meanwhile, Brock Boeser fits the bill as a dashing rogue like Han Solo. Perhaps that’s why the Canucks chose Boeser for the Han Solo-inspired collectible they’ll be giving away to fans.
Tickets purchased through the Canucks’ special Star Wars Night promotion will come with a collectible of Brock Boeser frozen in carbonite, just as Han Solo was in The Empire Strikes Back for Boba Fett to transport him to Jabba the Hutt.

Yes, Brock Boeser, fully encased in carbonite. He should be quite well protected — if he survived the freezing process, that is.
The Canucks noted that only tickets purchased through the promotion will receive the collectible, of which there are limited quantities available. Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster or
As Canucks collectibles go, it’s certainly unique. Like Jabba the Hutt, you could make the carbonite-encased star your favourite decoration.
