This Ambitious Fantasy Series Was Unlike Anything Else on TV (& It Ended Too Soon)

When it first came out in 2019, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this series, but the setting pulled me in pretty quickly. A city full of humans and mythical creatures? That alone sounded interesting. But this wasn’t a magical world where everyone got along. Far from it. There were fae who were treated as outsiders, tensions were running high with humans, and there was clearly something rotten going on behind the scenes. Then they threw a murder mystery into the mix. I was curious to see where it would all lead.

What really caught my attention was how much was going on beneath the surface. Carnival Row wasn’t just about supernatural creatures walking around in fancy costumes. It had complicated relationships and political rivalries that could turn ugly in a hurry. Orlando Bloom played detective Rycroft Philostrate, while Cara Delevingne brought Vignette to life as a fae refugee with a complicated past. Their story was only one piece of a much bigger conflict. I wanted to see where all of it was heading. Unfortunately, the series lasted just two seasons. And I can’t help thinking that its world had plenty more to offer.

Carnival Row Was a Fantasy Series Unlike Anything Else on Television

The setting was one of my favorite things about Carnival Row. This wasn’t another fantasy kingdom where somebody discovered a prophecy and set off to save the world. Its streets had a Victorian-era atmosphere, and its inhabitants included fae who were trying to build lives in a society that didn’t particularly want them around. It’s got a steampunk flavor, and I’m totally into it. They had jobs and relationships to worry about. They also had plenty of reasons to distrust the humans making the rules. That’s what made the setting feel lived-in. The fantasy wasn’t just there to give the production designers something fun to work with. It shaped the characters’ everyday lives and gave the story a personality of its own.

Even if you haven’t seen the show, you can check out this trailer for the first season. If it catches your interest, then definitely give it a try. And who knows? Maybe the show could be rebooted or continued with a different cast of characters in the same world?

I also appreciated how the series handled the tension between humans and fae. The supernatural elements were entertaining, but the prejudice directed at these creatures gave the story a more uncomfortable edge. Some viewers might have come for the mystery or the romance. I was just as interested in watching the city struggle with its own divisions. Philo’s investigations kept pulling him deeper into trouble, and Vignette had her own reasons for questioning the world around her. Their relationship added another layer to a story that already had plenty happening. There was enough material here to keep exploring for years. I don’t need every fantasy series to run forever, but when a show builds a world this detailed, I want to spend some time in it.

Why Carnival Row Ended Before Its Full Potential Could Unfold

When Carnival Row returned for its second season in 2023, I was hoping we’d get to spend more time with these characters. Instead, we got the final chapter. The trouble between humans and fae had become harder to ignore, and the people caught in the middle had some pretty difficult choices ahead of them. That’s the sort of setup that makes me want another season rather than a goodbye. There were still political grudges to settle and plenty of bad blood between the different factions. I kept thinking about where the writers could take all this if they had a little more room to play. Two seasons gave us a lot to chew on, but I wasn’t ready to leave this world behind just yet.

What makes the show’s relatively short run frustrating is that it had already done so much of the groundwork. It created a distinctive world and filled it with people whose problems went beyond fighting the latest monster. The political divisions mattered, and the characters’ decisions had consequences for the communities around them. That’s the sort of material that can make fantasy especially rewarding. I wanted to see how those tensions would continue to develop and what new problems might emerge as the characters tried to move forward. The series did reach a conclusion, so it isn’t quite right to say that it simply stopped in the middle of its story. What really matters is whether or not the ending means there can be moreto the story or not.

I still think Carnival Row had more stories to tell. For me, that’s a sign of good world-building. If you’re a fan, let us know if you think the story could have continued and why!
